It's no secret that period dramas are my favorite...and I am currently swamped in them. Let's take stock.

1. The Princess' Man - my current obsession. I am currently on ep 20 (22 has aired, 24 is the total number of eps). Politics, star-crossed lovers and tragedy. This is in the running for my favorite drama of the year.

On a shallow front, the fact that Park Shi Hoo never looked hotter doesn't hurt.

If you need subs, WITHS2 (best quality), DarkSmurf (best speed) and Viki (in the middle on both) are subbing this puppy. It's also the highest-rated prime time drama currently, so there is that :)

2. Warrior Baek Dong Soo. I am currently on ep 11 (I know!). 26 has aired and 30 is the total number of eps. It's not really art the way TPM is, IMO, art. But it's the closest I've seen kdrama come to wuxia (or shounen manga) and has a good ensemble cast who have a lot of fun with its adventure-and-intrigue in a coming of age package. I find it a lot less emotionally taxing than TPM and rather lighter but, be warned, it's still far from a light drama.

3. Gyebaek, the war epic. I always meant to check it out just for the cast - Lee Seo Jin, with his physicality and overpowering masculine screen presence, was born to be in a sageuk (together with Song Il Gook, I think they are the two actors who fit better in sageuk than in modern drama). Plus Seo Ji Hye and Cha In Pyo. But I was going to wait until TPM ended until evil evil evil [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore tempted me with a clip I posted earlier (number of times said clip was rewatched? 5). Still, this looks pretty darn heavy so I am not sure I can handle this and TPM at the same time. Let's see if my common sense or my obsession win. Meanwhile have a MV. This is Gyebaek's parents and all I can say is his daddy was an utter BAMF.

20 eps are out, 11 are subbed. Withs2 and viki are subbing this.

4. Tree with Deep Roots, starring Jang Hyuk (OMG YES!) and Shin Se Kyung, is starting next week, replacing the recently ended Protect the Boss. It looks like an intense mystery and I cannot wait.

5. Qng Shi Huang Fei - started airing on the 30th and will air two eps per day. I've blabbed enough about this one. Viki is subbing.

One problem - every freaking one of these is depressing! I am going to eat my own head soon. I think I'll take a break and watch Gumiho to keep my sanity.

Blame [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore, but I am currently obtaining all the available episodes of Gyebaek for a crazed marathon.

Hey, she posted this:

And said this: For a bit of context, where I am now, he was just freed after spending 5-10 years as a slave forced to fight against his country while all but catatonic from a severe case of post-traumatic depression, and she's the only one who can touch him without risk of his completely flipping out [and isn't afraid of him at all] and he doesn't really know how to initiate non-violent physical contact.

If you know me, you know I could no more resist it than a lemming could resist a jump off a very high cliff.

It doesn't hurt that Lee Seo Jin is one of the very few actors who can do no wrong in my eyes.

I kinda feel like rewatching Lovers now. Or Damo, but I need my heart intact.

Blergh, I think I got a mild case of food-poisoning. Fun fun fun.

But you know what makes everything better? Sexy shirtless sword-wielding grimy men. Especially when some of these men happen to be Lee Seo Jin and Cha In Pyo. In short, Gyebaek teaser has just dropped:

Is it two weeks from now yet?

BECAUSE I WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT!

Since this is going to take over Miss Ripley's slot, we are going to have two sageuks (Gyebaek v. Warrior BDS) go head-to-head. And while WBDS has a couple weeks' head-start and stars very popular with Noonas Yoo Seung Ho, I am predicting Gyebaek is going to wipe the floor with it ratings-wise. It looks a lot tougher (these guys really look like they could end you), more traditional, and when is the last time a Lee Seo Jin drama was not a hit? My money is on Gyebaek, though hopefully both will do well as I really do enjoy WBDS a lot.

It is no surprise that sageuk is my favorite kdrama genre and two big ones are about to drop into the schedule to bless me with their gloriousness.

1. Second trailer for tragic romance The Princess' Man - this is ep 1 preview )

2.

If you prefer your period guys in a more of a fighter than lover mode, Gyebaek, following the life of a famous general, is for you. Lee Seo Jin (who is so fierce and amazing and a huge crush) plays the titular character, supported by Cha In Pyo and Oh Yoon Soo. I am not sure but I just might get deliciously faint from the sheer amount of testosterone on screen.

Stills for the war epic Gyebaek with Lee Seo Jin. Ooooh, Naeuri! )
