Move over, Jung Il Woo, I have a new favorite character. His name is Crazy Chicken (!!!!), he's a student hoodlum and views Spunky Teacher as his noona. I'd ship that way hard, especially since, for full Gokusen resemblance, it turns out Spunky Teacher used to be a legendary teen hoodlum herself, but his whole adoration for snotty ballerina girl is too adorable.

Stuff stuff stuff )

Nothing is as good as a good jdrama, so favorite jdramas are my favorite dramas of all.

I did a Top Jdramas list some time ago, with reasons and vids, but time to update. Why? Well, for one, current dramas number 3-5 weren't even on the list then, because I haven't seen them.

Same rules as earlier apply: it’s all about which are my favorite jdramas? And why? Here is the list of my favorite dozen, with reasons, vids, and pics. Note: no drama that I haven't finished completely is on this list, because who knows how it will turn out. Beautiful Life might end up on the list once I have enough courage to finish it, but am not done yet. Also, I have a 'favorite scene' from each drama, and I described it very briefly, if at all, to make it as unspoilery as possible.

List behind cut, with reasons, caps and vids )

You know how I did a list for my favorite kdramas, here (even if it already has to be revised, seeing that The Legend is my fave kdrama ever, and actually my fave drama, period). Well, this is my Top 10 jdramas list.

Same rules apply: it’s all about which are my favorite jdramas? And why? Here is a Top 10 list, with reasons, vids, and pics. Note: no drama that I haven't finished completely is on this list, because who knows how it will turn out. Beautiful Life might end up on the list once I have enough courage to finish it, but am not done yet. Also, I have not yet seen a lot of famous jdramas (Friends, Million Stars, 1 Litre etc), because of a recent kdrama binge, which is about to give way to a jdrama one, so my list might be very different a few months from now ;) Also, I have a 'favorite scene' from each drama, and I described it very briefly, if at all, to make it as unspoilery as possible. Except for the Top 3, the places within Top 10 get reshuffled quite often. A drama I rank number 8 this week might be number four next ;) But the content of Top 10 stays the same.

List behind cut, with reasons, caps and vids )

ETA: Yes, I plan to do the same list for Taiwanese dramas as well. But I need to finish a few twdramas I am currently watching first (Romantic Princess, Corner with Love, My Lucky Star) so as to know whether they should be included.

I am sure that's not news to anyone who is interested on my flist, but Proposal Daisakusen is getting a two-hour special, with all the same cast. Even though I adored the open hopefulness of that ending, the thought of more Ken and Rei is just...eeeeee! And this time trying to work it through as best-friends-turned-couple, as opposed to just getting to that stage ;) What with that and Kurosagi, Yamapi is a busy boy lately.

In the news that is also not new to anyone who is interested, probably, but which fills me with annoyance, they are making Gokusen 3. WTF? I mean, how many classes of tough-but-underneath-it-good juvenile delinquents can be reformed by a year with an idealistic, yakuza family teacher. I mean, come ON! Leaving aside the whole 'it's not Gokusen without Shin' rant (so for another time), how repetitive can you get? It was original and funny once. Twice? What's the point? And thrice???? WTF. Nakama Yukie, I am sure you can do more interesting things to get your paycheck. I mean, not even Kame (who I adore in everything I've seen him in) being one of the leads in the second one tempted me to watch it, so I don't think the newest crop of junior, half-starved spangly pop stars will get me to tune in.

Semi-related, I dreamt of 1 Liter of Tears. How bizarre is that? I've never even watched it and don't plan to, either.

Tonight, I have come to a momentous realization:

It's all Matsumoto Jun's fault.

My current drama obsession that is turning me into a scary-vampire-looking person from lack of sleep?

MatsuJun. My first drama was Mars and it's still my favorite. But despite watching this and Meteor Garden (which I also adored), I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue the genre in general as opposed to them both being adaptations of manga I loved. Hana Yori Dango jdrama was my third, and it pushed me over the edge. Three in a row, thought I? Must find more. Now look at me.

Weird ships? MatsuJun again. There it was me, a most vanilla person, realizing I was going to a Special Hell, because I was shipping a teacher/student, something I found totally ick before. The drama? Gokusen. Ten minutes in, I was going 'whaaa? whaaaaa? I can't ship Shin/Yankumi' But there is was. (Just read my Gokusen posts for my flailing over that fact). And what did it open up? The floodgates. Forbidden Love. Then Sang-Doo. Now I am impatiently waiting for Hello My Teacher. Yeah.

Falling over the edge of obsessiveness and finally making me learn how to use clubbox (entirely in Korean! Mr. Mousie just shook his head when he learned) and watching hours and hours of a show entirely in Japanese because I am unwiling to wait a couple of days for subtitles? Can we say Hana Yori Dango 2.

Complete destruction of my principles of what I find acceptable in fiction? Yeah. Guess. What is the movie I am totally looking forward to? I am in love with my little sister. It's about twins in love with each other, for God's sake. I can't deal with any sort of 'cest. I was always horrified by it in fic. I am one of the only five people in Supernatural fandom who doesn't slash the brothers. I always have an instinctive shuddery reaction to 'cest in stories. But this movie? I am disturbed by being not at all disturbed but thinking 'angst! good hair! more angst!'

OK.

I give up.

I am afraid to watch Kimi Wa Petto for fear of what that will result in.

Th funny thing, he isn't even my favorite drama actor (Vic Zhou) or jdrama actor (Kimura Takuya or Yamapi are that). LOL.

Oh. I am going to hell. And it's all the fault of a jpop star.

In order to have a fun soundtrack on the way there, some MVs from MatsuJun dramas )

OK. I am still kinda crazed from the fact that we are getting a house. HOUSE!!!

But that shall not stop the geeky fannishness. Gokusen shippy squee )

And in other news, I have to say, watching Tokyo Juliet reminded me of something that I find interesting in doramas and manga and anime. It's the attitude to homosexuality. This one probably has it because it's based on a Japanese manga, but I find it interesting that here, a completely mainstream story, the heroine who is friends with the guy she is also in love with, completely reasonably assumes that he won't be interested in her because he is gay (why reasonable? Everyone is surprised when Liang starts hanging out with her as he is generally not into girls and he tells her he likes her because he thinks of her as kind of a boy). And that she actually asks him "Liang, do you prefer men?" and it's not played for laughs and she is not horror-stricken or anything. It's just one of those things in life, just as if she knew she had no chance with him because he only liked blondes. I really like that. Actually, I am unsure about Liang's sexual orientation anyhow (I don't care either). He clearly is in love with Sui, so he is at least bi, but I have no idea if he is bi or straight. He really doesn't demonstrate much interest in women, Sui has a very boyish figure and heck, he is a clothes designer. Of course, his pull-push attitude towards her is explained because he was in love with her from the start but knew she wouldn't like him once she found out about his parentage but it's not illuminating at all about the rest of it.

And also, I want to show off my new icon from Silence made by the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] winterspel. I am kinda dreading how this one is going to end though. I do love that about doramas. They can have very happy endings (Meteor Garden), utterly miserable ones (I Am Sorry I Love You, which is supposed to be really good, is one I am refusing to watch because it's going to make me want to off myself) or anything in between. I have no idea how Tokyo Juliet is going to end, but I do think chances of HEA there are a lot greater than in 'Silence.' It's interesting, the kinds of different angst doramas have. Because TJ is full of this delicious, Bollywoodish angst that is unreal situation-wise but the emotions are of course relatable (anyone can know what it feels like to be rejected in love or similar). And Silence strikes me as almost Victorian in its storyline of lonely children who meet again as adults and is very very angsty but in an understated, restrained fashion. More likely to make me cry, probably.
