Reading scanlations is the work of the devil. Or something. Reading about 5 chapters gave me a huge headache. Which led to very little of Tree of Heaven but the ten or so minutes I saw of ep 2 were WONDERFUL. Because this drama is only 10 eps, it moooooves. Also, a bit bizarrely, [livejournal.com profile] aliterati, the female lead in this looks a bit like a Korean version of you. Which is slightly surreal.

Tree of Heaven ramblings )

Oh, and I am on volume 4 of Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden and things finally started really cookin’! We get holding (Takiko has her hands stuck in a rock, long story, and Rimudo comes up from behind and just holds her up, so her hands would be on a level and more comfy) and we get KISSING! In the middle of a fight, when he is yelling at her to go back to her world and she is yelling at him she hates him. EEEE! And then he just grabs her and kisses her, while her eyes are still open, full of angry tears. And then he tells her he doesn’t like to see her in pain. And stalks off. MMMMM.

Picture of first kiss behind cut )

And also, a brief comment on Yuki stuff in volume 16 of Fruits Basket. Cut for spoilers for 16 )

What do you get when you combine:

(1) Takiko: A 1923 Japanese school-girl fond of the naganata (a kind of spear) entering a medieval-China like world entirely inside a book in order to summon seven celestial warriors to save the country. Only the country doesn’t want her. People think she brings bad luck and the ruler of it would rather see her dead in a ditch, literally.

(2) Rimudo: The hunky angsty hero, the first celestial warrior she encounters, who is drop dead gorgeous and the son of the King. Only he is not interested in helping out in the slightest, has a chip on his shoulder the size of a continent, and his father is hunting him to off him for good. Did I mention he can use his special power only when he transforms into a girl?

(3) The chosen celestial warriors. None of whom are enthused to be helping and who in addition to the above mentioned Rimudo/Limdo (I’ve seen it spelled both ways) include such stellar characters as a sorta Golem, a hot-headed but not very effective bounty hunter, and a child serial killer of sorts.

Did I mention that Rimudo has managed to get himself hired by the bad guys. In order to hunt himself? And that when Takiko and Rimudo first met, she thought he was a girl so she stripped naked to hop into bed with him to cool down his fever? Heh.

There are chases, and assassins, and deadly peril. There is a complicated plot, and star-crossed romance and it will all end in tears.

It's part romance, part adventure and wholly cracktastic.

What is it?

It’s Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden and I just started it and I love it.

And also? The art is bloody gorgeous. Scanlations are widely available and the first five volumes are out in print in the US as well.

A lot and I mean it, a lot, of art. If you have dial-up, beware )

Yes, I'll reply to all the fanfic thoughts posts. I just need to get my thinky cap on.

1. There are rumors that there will be a third season of Hana Yori Dango. I don't know what I think about it, except for amusement that Hanadan will clearly never die.

2. There is a Veronica Mars hate meme going around. You know the fandom is dying when even that is anemic.

3. When is vol 2 of Vampire Knight coming around? Ditto for more Absolute Boyfriend and Genbu Kaiden. Yes, I've read the scanlations (though I've been hoarding VK scanlations until I can binge), but it's not the same. I really want to do a list of the manga I like.

4. Ayashi No Ceres!!!! Still rocks. Aya/Toya is my shiniest OTP now (which is deja vu, as they were when I watched the anime).

Lengthy AnC spoilers for vols 7-8 )

5. [livejournal.com profile] hope_fuleigh's watch of Fushigi Yuugi is making me want a rewatch. I started with [livejournal.com profile] tatterpunk but then she had to leave.

6. Next manga on the list after AnC? Basara. [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore finally convinced me :)

7. I started rewatching Buffy's S1 Finale yesterday. So awesome. More meta comin' up.

8. TOYA. Yes. (LOL at Watase admitting in Vol. 8 that he's her fave). Someone needs to do an AnC live action. Starring Takki as Toya (yes, he's the one I wanted for Tamahome, too. I just think he looks like a Watase bishounen). Horihita Maki can be Aya. Yamapi would actually make awesome Yuhi, but then I'd have to ship Yuhi/Aya and that can't be.

Oh my. this is like Grey's Anatomy. On crack. Glorious, angst-filled crack. For those who don't like clicking on links without knowing what it is, this is an English-subbed trailer for an upcoming Taiwanese drama. Yeah, typing in 'Jerry Yan' into youtube search engine in a post Meteor Garden haze will bring up amazing things. And yum, he angsts so prettily. Women keep breaking his heart in these things, no? In fact, I understand it's a TV drama so suspension of disbelief is required, but the whole 'the girl ditched him' thing he seems to have got going is sort of straining it for me. I mean, the guy is bloody hot. I normally prefer blue eyed blondes and even I find him sex on a stick. So the whole 'hurt in love' puppy thing he has going? Unless there is a huge case of severe blindness in Asia I am not aware of? Unlikely.

What interesting lives TV doctors live. All that passion and angst and melodrama. Best Friend, who is a surgery resident currently, really must be lying to me when she tells me she has no news for me as all she does is work horrendous shifts and then gets home to crash. Yeah.

In other news, I have started on the second volume of Hana Kimi. First off, so much cuteness. I adore Sano who, if I were rather younger (and he wasn't fictional), I'd drag off to bed pronto. How someone manages to be both so grumpy and so sweet is a mystery. I am also completely enamoured of the whole 'she likes him but can't tell him because he can't know she's a girl and he likes her but can't tell her because he can't let her know he knows she's a girl' thing.

But you know what HK is making me think of, in more general terms? How fluid gender identity appears in manga and anime. Granted, I've seen it used in Western lit (from Twelfth Night to Heyer's Masqueraders) and it's often used in the anime/manga context the same way it was used in those Western stories, aka to bring women into a mileau they would normally be excluded from, but the prevalence strikes me as interesting. It's also interesting because it's almost as if it's het slash. In HK eg, one of the chracters is having a minor sexual orientation crisis because he is attracted to the heroine without knowing she's a girl (a time honored trope) and everyone assumes Sano has the hots for his new male roommate. But it's not really, because of course it's a girl.

I am watching Hameshaa, the Bolly movie about reincarnated lovers that proves that bad hair, like love, lasts forever. Hamesha thoughts )

On the other end of the spectrum, there is Creezy, a seventies movie with the icy and gorgeous Alain Delon. It's the very opposite of Hameshaa. It's small and feels painstakingly and cooly real. It basically is a day in the life of a politician intercut with his memories of affair with a gorgeous model. It's quite romantic and I can't wait to watch more. It also makes me wonder if there has ever been a good adaptation of Stendhal's The Red and the Black? Because young Delon would have made a great protagonist.

Also watched more Chobits Chobits and FY and GK thoughts )

In completely unrelated news (my brain jumps around like a magpie), the book rec for the week is something I have no idea how hard it is to find. It's Erve Bazen's And the flames consume (I have no idea what the name in English (or the original French) would be. I read it in Russian). It's a French novel and I read it in Russian translation, but I have no idea if an English translation exists. It's worth seeking out though. The novel deals with the immediate aftermath of the Pinochet coup. It actually is tightly focused on two people, Miguel and Maria who, if I ever was compiling a literary OTP list, would be very highly placed on it. The book is passionate: politically passionate (about what people do to each other and how it outrages one's conscience) and romantically passionate, as well. Ramblings about the novel )

And in other star-crossed romantics news, I was rewatching "Destiny," my fave ep of Roswell. I've forgotten how amazing Max/Liz were. Any good Dreamer fanfic recs? Please? [livejournal.com profile] keepaofthecheez, where is your stuff archived? And also, does anyone have caps of that scene of them hiding in the oveturned truck? For some reason what really gets me is the way she kisses his eyes, and the way her voice dies away on the word 'ended' when she says that his life ended when he saved her. And the way Max, half out of his head, utterly exhausted, fresh off the torture table, tells her that's when his life began and that what kept him alive during it all was the thought of her (and I love that he can't talk about what they did to him, it's too horrifying to him and he is indirect and he has to pause before he mentions it even in that fashion). If a man can say that to you after all that's happened, whoa. And in a way, being in such extremity, he has no control over his emotions much any more and you can feel love just pour off him. Max/Liz have never been more R&Jish than in that scene. Oh, and the bit where Max and Liz are surrounded and they are on the bridge and they look down at the water and you can tell they are terrified and they kiss each other and you can tell they think it might be their last, and then they jump, holding hands? OMG. My OTP. Musings on OTPs )

In related non-loverly news, I did see the finale of Doctor Who and forgot to post about it. Thoughts on Finale, OTPs and OT3s and David Tennant's coolness or lack thereof )

Continuing this crazy, directionless ramble, the next item on the agenda is gorgeous pictures from The Banquet, a Chinese movie coming out in late 2006. The Banquet has been described as a loose adaptation of "Hamlet"; it is a tale of fate and revenge set in 10th century China. A new Emperor has usurped the throne through murder. Zhang Ziyi plays the widowed Empress, who marries the new Emperor (Ge You) only to protect herself, but also secretly plots his death with the help of the Crown Prince (Daniel Wu) and the Chief Minister (Ma Jingwu). Yet the Prince and Minister each have their own plans for the throne, and, of course, so does the Emperor. All these intrigues are brought to a climax when the Emperor calls for a lavish banquet, where the murderous plans are set in motion.

Stills beneath the cut )

And because it seems I cannot end a post without a Hayden Christensen picspam, here is the next batch:

OK, I am all out of Hayden. Who should I picspam next? As long as they are reasonably attractive and someone I'd heard of, bring on the suggestions!

And thus ends the really long post. No wonder it took me days.

More Hayden )

OK, I am all out of Hayden. Who should I picspam next? As long as they are reasonably attractive and someone I'd heard of, bring on the suggestions!

And thus ends the really long post. No wonder it took me days.
