None of the dramas I am watching atm are period dramas and I cannot go too long without watching one. So I made the sensible decision to rewatch Hong Gil Dong, i.e., the drama that tore my heart out and danced on its remains. I am so very smart...

Hong Sisters are very uneven writers for me - I love some of their stuff and cannot stand the others. But while I immensely enjoy and love Delightful Girl Chungyang and My Girl, Hong Gil Dong is the only one of their dramas that made my top 10 kdrama list, the only one that I think tries to address more than the usual romcom 'when will they and how?' trope. I have not been able to truly love any of their dramas since HGD (though I did enjoy Gumiho Girlfriend) but what a way to go out! HGD is a fusion sageuk, a smart take on a Robin Hood story, very dark underneath its initially wacky exterior. They have never tried anything like this before or since, but I will always love them for doing this once.

A lot of dramas I love pale on rewatches, or even if not right away, pale once a few years have passed and my tastes mutate. This is not true with HGD. I rewatched some bits of ep 24 before settling down to a rewatch proper and it's still as good, as moving, and as cool as ever.

Not related, but I've been binging on Joe Dassin's songs. Bringing you my current favorite:

You know what occured to me after episode 6? Hwa Young will clearly do anything so Jae Hee and Bong Sun don't get together, but it is not because she is in love with JH herself or wants him to sex her up or anything. No, what she can't deal with is the possibility that he would be able to escape from the codependent, exclusive hell that they have been trapped in together for the last x years. Because she has no such way of escape.

In other news, ooooh boy, are kdramas growing up!

Anatomy of a kiss )

Also, not related to the above, but I believe, Padam Padam is named after this awesome Edith Piaf song:

I am catching up on my New Tales of the Gisaeng backlog, am barely twenty minutes into ep 7 and I have just died.

Because Damo just sent Saran an enormous bouquet and signed it this way.

For some reason, this way of signing really got me (it is a reference to his name - his name is Ah Damo = Adamo = Salvatore Adamo = singer of Tombe la Neige). I love even more that this is the first thing he did after telling freakshow RaRa he was not interested in her and doesn't want to date her. I love him because he is so very very blunt and doesn't play games.

Kdramas just haven't been grabbing me this year much - I have been watching mainly cdramas and twdramas. But New Tales of the Gisaeng has, so far, been the sole exception. Love it to bits.

As a bonus, have Salvatore Adamo sing "Tombe la Neige":

Off to binge more...

But not before leaving one of my favorite French songs here, even if it has nothing to do with Gisaeng.
