Number 1 reason why I love Ayashi No Ceres:

Yup, I am a Toya fangirl. (I only have one volume left and I am sort of postponing because I don't want it to be over).

Let me tell you, reading a volume with a cover like this on crowded public transit results in people giving you som really interesting looks.

I have finished volume 1 of Fruits Basket and all I can say is KYO!!! I still adore Yuki like whoa, but I think I am going to be a Kyo girl all the way (it's interesting because in RL I am all about the reserved guys, but here, as in Hanadan, I am all about the loud one :D I really have no consistency with what type of manga/anime character I prefer. E.g. Toya is a hell of a lot closer to Yuki, type-wise, than he is to Kyo.)

I adore Tohru. She is going to be one of my fave manga heroines, I can tell. She isn't bratty or whiny or saintly or anything. And she is cheerful without being annoying about it.

OMG, I loved the bit where Kyo came to meet Tohru at night because she was walking through the forest alone, for her safety. And OMG, it's adorable how he is trying so hard to learn how to behave and not blurt out first, defensive things that come into his mouth. And I love that Tohru realizes then and there that yes, he is trying to apologize, he just has no idea how, and that he is a good guy, just with no social skills at all (What kind of life did he have before anyway? Seriously. When Hot Cousin talks to him about some girl who will eventually tell him ILY, Kyo says he would ask her if she is crazy. Bwah?) Just as she basically sums it all up later in her head by thinking that beneath his scowl there is an awkward smile. Heee.

You know what really strikes me? How taken aback and delighted both Yuki and Kyo seem to be that Tohru is actually interested in them, as people, in their likes and dislikes (gardening for Yuki, the martial arts for Kyo). It's like they have to get used to the concept that they are worthwhile. That they matter. Because Yuki, in his quiet way, is just as anti-social as Kyo: he seems to be totally afraid of people rejecting him so he never lets them in. Whatever screwed them both up (I am assuming the curse), it's kinda like the Domyouji-Shin dichotomy I discussed with [livejournal.com profile] kitsune714 a while back, of the extravert-introvert reaction to the same fubar situation: it made Yuki a perfectionist introvert who is reserved because he doesn't want people to let him in and be hurt, and because if he is 'perfect' everything will be all right, and it made Kyo sort of lash out in not knowing how to behave and act out and push people away that way. Hmmm.

How much did I love the scene where Kyo and Yuki came to get Tohru from the house of evil relatives? I LOVED IT. Because they both miss having her in the house. I love it! I am not getting a romantic vibe here at all yet (though, because of personal preferences, I am Kyo/Tohru if I have to pick, though I am not rabid yet) but more like they want people who care about them around. And I love the bit where Kyo tells her it's OK to be unhappy and she should be able to express it. Because she is sunny (probably because she's tried so hard not to be a burden on people who had to take her in) but she's had a hard life. GUUUH. Kyo love.

I feel really bad about no hugging because a hug, while not the sexiest or most romantic, is perhaps the most comforting of all emotions: it makes you feel cared for.

Oh, and I really like the Boar Girl (blanking on the name) who wants to marry Kyo. LOL. She reminds me a bit of Chidori from Ceres and a lot of a grown-up version of Merle from Escaflowne (which makes sense as Kyo is rather Van-like). Heeeee. If they hooked up, it would be non-stop fireworks. :D

Oh my. this is like Grey's Anatomy. On crack. Glorious, angst-filled crack. For those who don't like clicking on links without knowing what it is, this is an English-subbed trailer for an upcoming Taiwanese drama. Yeah, typing in 'Jerry Yan' into youtube search engine in a post Meteor Garden haze will bring up amazing things. And yum, he angsts so prettily. Women keep breaking his heart in these things, no? In fact, I understand it's a TV drama so suspension of disbelief is required, but the whole 'the girl ditched him' thing he seems to have got going is sort of straining it for me. I mean, the guy is bloody hot. I normally prefer blue eyed blondes and even I find him sex on a stick. So the whole 'hurt in love' puppy thing he has going? Unless there is a huge case of severe blindness in Asia I am not aware of? Unlikely.

What interesting lives TV doctors live. All that passion and angst and melodrama. Best Friend, who is a surgery resident currently, really must be lying to me when she tells me she has no news for me as all she does is work horrendous shifts and then gets home to crash. Yeah.

In other news, I have started on the second volume of Hana Kimi. First off, so much cuteness. I adore Sano who, if I were rather younger (and he wasn't fictional), I'd drag off to bed pronto. How someone manages to be both so grumpy and so sweet is a mystery. I am also completely enamoured of the whole 'she likes him but can't tell him because he can't know she's a girl and he likes her but can't tell her because he can't let her know he knows she's a girl' thing.

But you know what HK is making me think of, in more general terms? How fluid gender identity appears in manga and anime. Granted, I've seen it used in Western lit (from Twelfth Night to Heyer's Masqueraders) and it's often used in the anime/manga context the same way it was used in those Western stories, aka to bring women into a mileau they would normally be excluded from, but the prevalence strikes me as interesting. It's also interesting because it's almost as if it's het slash. In HK eg, one of the chracters is having a minor sexual orientation crisis because he is attracted to the heroine without knowing she's a girl (a time honored trope) and everyone assumes Sano has the hots for his new male roommate. But it's not really, because of course it's a girl.

1. Last Exile is totally boring me. I went from watching it while reading to taking a bath while Husband watches it. He just summarizes it all for me. But it severely appeals to him so it makes me happy as must make up for his having to a. drag me to bed at 3:30am yesterday from watching Meteor Garden (me: I'll come to bed soon, I promise. him: I know you, you'll watch it till 7 am) and b. having to, in consequence, to put up with me watching it today.

2. Finding good anime fanfic is impossible. If you like weird, uncanonical slash pairings, you can find good fic actually. But look for normal Hana Yori Dango fic? Or Fushigi Yuugi? Or MARS? Or Escaflowne? Or Trigun? Give it up. In the best case scenario, you are going to get badly spelled Doumyouji/Tsukushi sex or how it's Van and Hitomi turning into R&J. In the worst case scenario? Let's just say that it makes Harry Potter mpreg seem nice. Surely I can't be the only grown-up person who likes any of these and likes fic. But hey, it's still better than finding Meteor Garden fic. Because there isn't any. Do I have to write my own? I want to read DMS/SC fic. Now. Argh.

3. I have a horrible temptation to write some Shi-Mein/Shiao You fic. Or (depending on the spelling) Xi Men/Xiao You fic. Heck, I am not even even sure how to spell their names but I don't care, because have shocked myself by becoming a rabid shipper for a ship almost no one else seems to care about one way or another (people don't dislike it, it's just there is nothing about it I can find, not in English, at least). Because there simply isn't any fic out there, good bad or indifferent. I think I have just found myself a shipper for the most obscure ship ever. I am actually even going to watch Meteor Rain because it has a vignette dealing with them. And I want to find out what happened to their equivalents in the manga. Also, shipping for a ship who does not end up together is making me kinda grouchy. She moves to Canada and he mopes for a bit and goes back to his old ways does not a happy Dangermousie make, realism be damned. The ending in Meteor Rain re: that storyline better be open ended, is all I am going to say.

4. Jackie on Veronica Mars. I love the girl. She is not this season's Logan (a hated character we begin to like), she is this season's Veronica. Someone who is shallow and useless but grows and matures under pressure. After all, watching the show with Veronica 1.0, shallow, shy, Lilly-follower, lover of puppies and kittens and ditcher of unpopular people, would be deadly dull. Yay Jackie! You are cooler than status quo Veronica, actually.

5. Lee and Dee: pretty together. Happy and nice together. Good for them, but not very exciting to watch. So I am OK with them being the eternal ship as long as they don't spend too much time on them.

6. I am still obsessed with Fushigi Yuugi. I have the hots for a 17-year-old martial genius from a book world patterned on Ancient China, which is kinda disturbing. But I can't help it. I also have an urge to be immature and write Miaka+Tamahome=4evr on my notebooks. Except I don't have any notebooks any more. Also, Trigun is love (and peace, I suppose).

7. I have the horrifying thought that I already ran through Hollywood and Bollywood movies and now have moved on to Asian entertainment (it certainly helps that the world is full of pretty men of every ethnicity), so what shall I do when I run through that? I don't think Namibia makes that many films.

8. Bollywood is good. Also full of eye candy.

Long long catch-all post for all 3-day weekend activities.

Finished The Brigade by Howard Blum, a non-fiction account of the Jewish brigade in the British army that fought in WWII and afterwards hunted down Nazi criminals and helped Jews escape into Palestine. It’s an amazing read that follows 3 of the Brigade’s members and if it didn’t happen for real, you’d think this was severely implausible.

I am also reading Jude Morgan’s The King’s Touch which is a novel of Charles II through the eyes of his illegitimate son the Duke of Monmouth. It’s a really unusual approach and I simply love the style and the prose.

I saw Tristan and Isolde yesterday and liked it, Isolde’s bizarre tendency to read John Donne notwithstanding. Yes, he is a poet who transcends space and time, but I never thought this worked backwards. Why not just have her read some translated Roman or Greek love poetry? Some of it was pretty hot stuff. Catullus and all.

T&I thoughts )

I also saw a movie on [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear’s rec and actually fell madly in love. The movie? Turn Left Turn Right with Takeshi Kaneshiro (yum) and Gigi Leung (who I simply must see more of). It’s a very romantic, very light, very understated movie about two neighbors who never meet because they always go different ways but when they finally meet, it’s love. They exchange phone numbers but they end up being washed out by the rain. Will they meet again?

On the gorgeousness that is Turn Left Turn Right. With pictures )

I need more Asian Cinema movie recs.

And now, on to my thoughts on Escaflowne. Really long and spoilery Escaflowne thoughts )

Now I need good Escaflowne fic recs. Surely there must be some there.

OK, now interested in more anime. So far, choices are:

Finished Escaflowne and thought it was amazing. I have a long post I want to make about it, mainly about the losing v. letting go and the idea that all things should be in their proper place but I am tired, so later. But yes, it was good and now I am interested in seeing other anime. Any recs?

Also, finally saw BSG ep and it's one of my favorites. I have long thoughts about it, but once again, a post on it later. I especially loved how the alienness of Sharon has been maintained.

Title: Color Schemes
Fandom: Escaflowne.
Pairing: Allen/Marlene. Yeah, I am writing a fic for a pairing nobody seems to like (if my brief glance around the net is correct).
Summary: In the fairy stories she read as a child, the beautiful princess would always but always have a faithful knight and they would fall in love and marry and live happily ever after, whatever that meant, with propriety and servants and sunrises and moonrises that were perfect on command.
A/N: I am not sure about the tenses and would really like a feedback telling me if this works, a.k.a. beta.

[livejournal.com profile] katranna came over and stayed the night so we ended up marathonning Escaflowne and I went to bed only when my eyes were literally not working any more. And we watched 2 more eps in the morning during breakfast. I am pretty fried today (obviously). It’s psychotically addictive, though, and I have only 4 episodes left.

I have also decided that my favorite character is Allen though at times Van was giving him a run for his money Van spoilers ), and Baby Van is the most adorable thing ever minor Van spoilers ). I want to adopt Baby Van, though considering what I want to do to the grown-up counterpart, that is perhaps troubling. But I digress.

Yes, Allen’s my favorite, which is unusual because usually I pick the guy who gets the girl or whatever. But I think in a way, Allen fits the most into the pattern of heroes I like: impossibly elegant, blond and blue eyed, most competent fighter, emotionally fucked-up (he and Van can bond over that), and willing to do some pretty “non-straightforward things” out of passion or in pursuit of good goals Huge Allen spoilers. Seriously ), and still managing to maintain their honor, but not bloodless propriety all the time.

I am also interested to see that there is not much shipping in the show (unlike in the fanfic). I mean, there are romantic feelings but they are proportional and realistic. Hitomi is after all 15, and not a modern Juliet. In fact, of all the relationships, the most interesting to me are often non-romantic: Folken and Van, for example, is riveting. Of all the romantic relationships, the one I find myself most interested in, is oddly enough Allen-Marlene-Millerna thing. Allen spoilers, dealing with romance ). Of course, this whole Marlene thing is why I think Allen-Millerna would never work out even if he genuinely fell for her, On Millerna and her options )

In any event, I think what Allen needs is not a OTP but his sister back, because it’s his failure while out with her, and her disappearance that has been haunting his life. Psychoanalyzing Allen and Van and Folken, with spoilers )

Btw, for a hurt/comfort whore, this show is heaven, btw. Wounded Van (all the time), wounded Allen, wounded Folken. Ahhhhh. And I love that Hitomi’s strength and goodness are not inexhaustible. She gets snappy or in a funk or whatever. And she can’t make up her mind Allen or Van. Almost like me :)
