Mary Stayed Out All Night is a shocking new drama that details the quirky adventures of three goths who meet on the internet and decide they found love with each other - all three of them.

They are happier than they could have ever imagined - in exchange for borrowing her pants, Guy N1 helps Girl make a quasi-wedding dress out of paper tissues. Guy N2 makes money for all of them utilizing his tech skills to film their threesome encounters and uploading them on the internet. And they all share a hairsylist.

But sadly, society is unforgiving of their love and the three find themselves facing obstacles. Fed up with the hypocrisy of the world, the three embark on a art performance cum killing spree - while the Girl lures the victims (and wields the hatchet), Guy N1 strangles them with his guitar string while Guy 2 hides the bodies. Each murder performance is elaborately staged in a graveyard and filmed by Gyu N1 with a nihilistic voiceover by Girl (whose red boots symbolize both the blood of her victims and her communistic leanings) and camerawork by Guy N2.

Well, that's what that poster screams to me this drama is going to be about, but sadly, it seems not.

A pity - I would very much watch that.

As [livejournal.com profile] clairiere put it about the poster, "Looks like something you'd get if Tim Burton stepped into the soonjung manhwa world, with a hatchet."

This was sheer perfection.

It's gotten to the point where I am actively irritated it's Gun Wook and not Tae Sung who is the main character. Not really because of shipping (though they have many more shippy scenes than the ostensibly main couple of Gun Wook/Jae In and the chemistry between Kim Jae Wook and Han Ga In is ridiculous, compared to lack of such between Kim Nam Gil and Han Ga In) but because there is a much bigger problem - a problem with the entire drama in fact - it's that the character of Gun Wook, the protagonist, is the least interesting of the bunch. We are supposed to root for Gun Wook to get what he wants - whether it's the girl or his vengeance but I cannot. I don't find him likeable but, more importantly, I don't find him interesting or relatable at all. A big reason for it is that he is so static - he has not changed or grown one bit (nor has there ben some revelation to put his character in a new light). Jae In of ep 11 is not Jae In of ep 1, the same is true for Taera, Tae Sung, Mone, etc. But Gun Wook - he remains exactly the same. And that is BORING. When you add in the fact that right there, next to him on screen, is Tae Sung - who is dynamic and unpredictable and sympathetic, Gun Wook just becomes even more boring by comparison. I find Gun Wook the weak link of the story and it's a problem - he is the protagonist!

Anyway, I am not watching more BG until I know how it ends but I couldn't help myself and watched a bit of ep 11 :)

Now that I am Legend has been rushed into production for a May broadcast, I keep wondering who they are going to cast as the male lead opposite Kim Sun Ah? This is such a rush job they don't really have the time to look around.

Unless they are going for a younger man storyline, their leading guy has to be over 30 and I can't think of anyone who'd fit.

People like Kang Ji Hwan (it would actually be pretty interesting to see them together), Gong Yoo, Song Seung Heon, Cha Seung Won, Kwon Sang Woo, Song Il Gook, Park Shi Hoo, Ji Sung etc are all either doing dramas now or will be doing dramas or movies shortly and thus can't take on another one. A whole bunch of actors who'd be suitable are in the army. I honestly can't think who is left. This is completely random but Park Yong Ha is age-appropriate and has no drama coming up. But other than him I can't come up with anyone. Maybe Lee Sung Jae or Park Shin Yang (but the latter is banned by the studios). Hmmm.

Guesses? Suggestions?

I am horribly curious.

3. Haven't had a chance to watch this week's eps of Prosecutor Princess but this cap (from soompi) makes my heart flutter.

You know one thing I cannot stand in kdrama heroines?

When little-girl-behavior is combined with big heart (or in common parlance - lack of spine and letting every jerk in history walk all over you while you smile at them and ask for more).

The thing that drives me crazy is that we are supposed to think the former is cute and the latter admirable.

NOTE: Being a doormat is not on. Being goodhearted = helping kids and puppies or volunteering in a soup kitchen. It is NOT allowing everyone to fool you and then apologizing to them for the inconvenience they must have felt.

I believe we were supposed to find Kae In so very awesome and good-hearted because when she catches the man who attempted to rape her and also swindled her out of her house, she...takes him out to eat because he must be hungry. And when he says he needs to go to the restroom she lets him go (and is shocked he ran away). Just as we are supposed to find it touching that when her boyfriend dumps her telling she was pathetic, she apologizes to him for not recognizing his feelings earlier. ARE YOU FUCKING INSANE, WOMAN? Ugh. (When I think what the heroines of 3 other kdramas I am watching would have done to either of the creeps I cheer up immensely...suffice it to say there would be no pieces left to pick up.)

But then this drama intends us to find cute that Kae In still dresses like a 10-year-old for every occasion and has never brushed her hair in her life (I don't care what she wears inside the house or shopping, just as I don't care her house is messy, but when you are going to work you dress appropriately for said work). We are supposed to find it cute that she demands a bus driver divert a rush hour bus full of people to a police station because someone grabbed her accidentally (by all means, report the guy - call the cops - or are you not bright enough to figure it out?)

We are supposed to think it's funny that she repeatedly outs someone despite promising not to. Harhahahahar. See me die laughing. The joke is supposed to be -- ooooh, it's so embarassing for this guy who is actually stright -- but all I keep thinking is that outing someone (falsely or not) in conservative Korea can be a huge career and social life killer and why can't she keep her damn mouth shut?

Did I mention she is needy, codependent and rude?

She doesn't seem to be an idiot savant either - as far as I can see she is not good at anything, to compensate for her nightmare of a personality. Forget competence at life - she can't even run without twisting her ankle.

Ugh. I really loathe her but even more so whoever came up with her character.

Korea, you give me so many awesome kdrama women. But sometimes? Sometimes you screw up.

ETA: I loathe the hero of this drama as well. But I find him boring even more than I loathe him. So boring, in fact, that I can't muster any enthusiasm for even a rant about him. Ugh. He is like one of Kae In's furniture pieces - with about that level of interest to him.

You know, from now on I make a rule - I am going to avoid every Lee Min Ho drama ever. I think the guy is good-looking and talented but the dramas he picks make me want to claw my eyes out. (Son Ye Jin is safe because I've seen her in multiple awesome things. I am going to view this as an aberration and pretend it didn't happen).

I ship them so much because something is oh-so-very-wrong:

Seriously. I can sense dysfunction and angst from miles away. And I don't mean because Hyeri prefers Manly Prosecutor Se Joon.

Because In Woo is gorgeous and very good to Hyeri and rescues her from predicaments, and has a great sense of humor and killer chemistry with her.

He is also CERTAINLY up to no good. I 100% believe that he genuinely cares for her, actually is even very in love with her.

But the fact remains that:

(a) All that courting of Hyeri is totally carrying out a plan - ep 5 cements that suspicion into utter certainty when he talks (to his father) about how it's all going according to plan. I am going to bet Hyeri's father wrecked his family somehow.
(b) He has hired someone to basically follow Hyeri 24/7 and report on what she does to him. That is very very NOT ON. That's not behavior of a wannabe lover - it's either a behavior of an obsessed stalker or (as is much more likely in his case) someone who needs this info because Hyeri is crucial in his revenge plans.

Let's just say it's crystal clear he ain't buying her $2000 shoes because when they were kids she gave him $2 cupcakes. (And that is another thing that shows how fishy he is - he NEVER brings up the fact that they used to know each other as children - he pretends he's never met her before).

I am DYING FROM CURIOUSITY as to what his deal is. This is only a 16 ep drama so hopefully we find out soon!

What are you up to, In Woo?

In unrelated news I want all the prosecutors in Hyeri's department except for Se Joon (sort of) and Lady Prosecutor to DIAF. She wins a case but they find out she was really chubby in high school so they book a low-calorie celebration meal and ostentatiously remove some rice and other dishes from her. DIE DIE DIE PIGS.
