MBC, if your idiotic refusal to pay wages which are indisputably owed results in Playful Kiss being affected via filming being stopped/scrapped due to the union strike, so help me, I am flying to Korea myself to yell at your idiot executives in person!

UGH.

A smaller ugh on behalf of Kim Suro, which I intended to watch once it was done. Nobody should mess with period dramas.

Paradoxically, I am not upset about Dong Yi, which actually stopped filming and has no eps to be aired Mon/Tues (!!!!!) because I never got into it and that way my new favorite Sungkyunkwan Scandal will have a heavyweight ratings competitor out of the way and will hopefully do better.

And somehow filming of Gloria resumed which makes me happy. Along with PK and Scandal, it's the only drama I am truly obsessed with this season (I do love Baker King and Giant but not to obsessive levels in general).

Btw, I know I am way behind on replies, I am sorry and promise to get to them soon.

Instead of catching up on my ginormous backlog, I have been rewatching parts of Personal Taste ep 10 and taking come caps. I am not even in the mood to watch anything else, no matter how good. I just want to wallow in PT.

I am obsessed with this drama. OBSESSED. It is definitely my drama of the spring season to me - by now I have achieved this absolute emotional immersion that is my goal in drama watching but doesn't happen all too often. I get incoherent, I get giddy, and rageful, and happy, and sniffly. Perfect, perfect.

Especially ep 10 which was such an emotional hothouse - yes, I love dramas because they turn me into an emotional vampire. MMMMM.

Some thoughts and caps of ep 10 )

Of course, all this rewatching forced me to confront the fact that I will never get through my backlog - i.e. there is no way I can keep up with 8 airing dramas. It's not doable, especially since Kimura's Moon Lovers (Tsuki no Koibito) starts next week and there is no way in hell I am not following that one as it airs. Nine airing dramas? No way.

So some major pruning is occurring:

Keeping for Weekly Viewing:

Personal Taste; Prosecutor Princess; Sunao No Narenakute - These three dramas I am obsessed about. I am not giving them up for anything.

Oh My Lady - OML is easy to keep up with since I skip all the scenes not involving the OTP or the cute kids. I am not as in love with it as I am with the three up top but it's fun.

Keeping, Maybe:

Yankee-kut to Megane-chan - subs for this are irregular so I am considering just waiting until it's done. But will see.

Dropping:

Down with Love - let's face it, I am 10 eps behind, the drama is almost done, I might as well wait until it's all done and marathon. Especially since I prefer downloadable subs to viikii ones for this so I can ff through parts that do not interest me and those subs are rather behind so it will be a while until they will be completed.

Dong Yi: - I am 6 or 8 eps behind (depending on whether you count raws or subbed). I might as well give up for now. Once the spring drama season is over, I can catch up and DY is so long that it will still be running then and once I catch up, I can just join the weekly watching again.

Cinderella Unni: I am less than 3 eps behind which is nothing but I don't want to catch up. All the main characters seem to have become permanent residents of Miseryville which wears down on one after a while. I have made a discovery that while I can watch most other genres as airing dramas, I cannot do it with melodramas. I prefer to have all my angst-emo-melo in one big, controlled by me, gulp and not in weekly dribs and drabs (see Will It Snow at Xmas, another excellent melodrama, that I tried to follow as it aired, had to give up, but really enjoyed marathonning after). So I'll catch up with CU once it's done.

1. I covet the outifts, even if they would look hideous on my figure.

2. Dong Yi = awesome. She's brave and smart and a troublemaker and has the requisite tragic backstory.

3. Bae Soo Bin is a freaking ninja! Also, unearthly gorgeous. If they expect me to ship Dong Yi with the King instead, they are deluded even though

4. The Playboy King is totally hot!

These were my in-depth observations of the day.

Sadly, as I can't do more than 4 airing dramas, Personal Taste is getting dropped.

1. I have watched Cinderella Unni raw. Yes, that is how obsessed I am. This drama is perfect. In addition to all the big, achingly-perfect shippy scenes, this little one got me the most.

Those are the cutest socks ever )

2. In other news of awesome dramas, haven't watched ep 3 of Prosecutor Princess as no subs but apparently the end of the ep promises me this delicious h/c angst?

Bring it on! )

3. I have liked what I've seen of Dong Yi. It's a keeper. But 5 dramas is too much even for me and I think I am going to drop Personal Taste. It hasn't grabbed me yet, so bye-bye. I'll catch up later on it though.

So, now that every Spring drama has started, here are my opinions and takes on what I will be following this spring.

Drama Loves

Cinderella Unni - I have already posted repeatedly about my obsession. I was not looking forward to it at all because the promos put me off. But somewhere in the first 5 minutes I fell in love and by the end of ep 2 I became rabid. Everything about it perfect - gorgeous cinematography, tormented fascinating real characters, dysfunctional and magnetic relationships, great acting by everyone involved, and above all, the chemistry between Moon Geun Young and Chun Jung Myung is so intense sometimes I want to look away because I feel I am intruding. This off-beat twisted take on the Cinderella story, following Cinderella's older sister played to the hilt by Moon Geun Young as this deeply damaged, fierce young woman is simply incredible.

Prosecutor Princess - my other obsession of the season. I liked the first episode but by the end of episode 2 I simply fell in helpless love. I adore Hyeri, our prosecutor heroine played by Kim So Yeon (you won't recognize her as the same woman from IRIS) as a self-absorbed heroine who is not interested in bonding or humanity but is nontheless whip-smart and capable. I adore her relationship with the mysterious lawyer played by one of the sexiest kdrama actors ever, Park Shi Hoo - their chemistry is ridiculous and their verbal, high-speed sparring reminds me of best screwball movies. I adore all the other characters. It's so irresistable and perfect.

Drama Likes

Personal Taste - have seen one episode of it and, despite my previous worries about it, I really liked it. The first half of the first episode wasn't working for me - nothing was bad or anything but it didn't gel but then about the halfway mark it clicked into place and I fell in like. It's funny (I laughed out loud repeatedly), light, snappy, and I like both the protagonists. I was worried from the promos that Song Ye Jin's character would be an irritating useless ditz a la Jandi but thankfully this is not the case. Actually she reminds me a bit of Hotaru from Hotaru no Hikari - she does well professionally but her house is a disaster zone and dating-wise she's rather a disaster too. She is awesome though - the first ep is worth watching for the scene when a coworker tries to take advantage when she's drunk and she comes to and punches the hell out of him. Lee Min Ho's finicky perfectionist is awesome - you can tell underneath his brusque manner is someone with heart and a sense of responsibility (doing his best to pay his workers despite the cash troubles it's going to cause). I kept having this niggling sense of recognition at the back of my head and finally near the end of the ep it hit me - LMH is sort of channeling Joo Ji Hoon (come back, oppa, come back!!!!) and there is no quicker way to my heart. (I remember the initial rumors back way when had Yoon Eun Hye and Joo Ji Hoon in these roles and honestly it would have fit them like a glove). It's funny, it's cute, it has potential, and I like the chemistry between SYJ and LMH even if it's not yet out-of-this-world scorching the way the chemistry is in my two 'love' dramas.

Oh My Lady - have seen 4 eps and it's such a funny, tongue-in-cheek drama with so many of my favorite tropes in one place - unwitting parents, contracts, house sharing, immature stars, older woman/younger man, and Siwon topless :P This drama hasn't made me feel deeply but it always puts me in good mood by the time the ep is done. And it looks like it's going to kick into a more serious gear soon and I am looking forward to it.

Potential Substitutes

Dong Yi - everything I have heard about it sounds really good and the 50-ep count isn't putting me off if it's done weekly like the rest of the dramas but I am already following 4 dramas. I simply cannot add another one to my slate. Well, unless Bae Soo Bin goes topless. Please notify me if that happens, thanks. (Joking aside, the fact that Han Hyo Joo and Bae Soo Bin are in the same drama again and he is an angsty sexy ninja protecting her from childhood and he won't get her, again, pisses me off. If he was going to get her, I would have cleared the space on my slate no matter what).

1. You guys, I just realized that somewhere in that really really long synopsis for Road Number 1, they promise me "passionate lovemaking" by the OTP when they hide in an abandoned building! With the hero on one-day military leave in the middle of war! While they are hiding from her former fiancee!

*is dead now*

2. I ship them already. Can Bad Guy be here sooner?

I plan to check out all three of the starting Wed/Thurs dramas, am enjoying Oh My Lady and want to watch Dong Yi and Birth of the Rich.

But nothing gets my excitement pumping the way the summer dramas do: Bad Guy, Road No. 1, Kim Soo Ro, (a period drama about a warrior city founder starring my total obsessive crush Ji Sung! And reuniting him with his Swallow the Sun costar Yoo Oh Sung who played Jackson in StS and became a big crush), What's Up (Im Ju Hwan!), Comrade (another Korean war drama), My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox (Hong Sisters and Lee Seung Gi = love).

Ahhhh.

For the record, we are only 3 months into 2010 and I have already loved the following dramas: Chuno, Pick the Stars, Oh My Lady, Will It Snow on Christmas, The Reputable Family and liked what I've seen of Jejjongwon and Pasta as well. Good year!
