Mad Squee! Hong Sisters, my favorite drama screenwriters, have another drama in the works - something about an idol group.

But honestly, who cares about the topic? Seeing that three of their four dramas are in my kdrama Top 10 (My Girl, DGCH and Hong Gil Dong. Couple or Trouble was not bad but was not my thing), it could be about anything and I'll still watch madly.

If you want a sample of their work, check out the mvs for three of their dramas )

I am so irritated with Korean version of Hana Yori Dango at the moment.

It's a living proof of a mess you get when you put together:

a. excellent cast
b. huge budget
c. a messy, nonsensical, illogical script.

Seriously, wtf, Korea? K-Hanadan was at its best in the beginning, when it followed the manga closely. The more and more it departed from it, the less logical sense it made and the more I had to handwave things. At this point, not only is it nowhere near dethroning Meteor Garden or the jdrama from their 'favorite adaptations' places, it's making less sense than an average well-written kdrama.

You do not have to slavishly follow the manga. But then you have to make sure you have a good script which makes its own internal coherent sense - with character progressions, logical segways, developments that make sense. Oh, and if you at least try to be true to the spirit of the original story, that also helps. Look at the Japanese Hanadan - it's the perfect example. It didn't choose to go the literally faithful adaptation road of the awesome Meteor Garden, but it remained true to the spirit of the story and the characters - Matsujun's Domyouji and Mao's Makino are, in essense, very much like their manga counterparts. Jandi and Jun Pyo are miles away. Not only that, but even if they reorganized the events significantly, it made both character progression sense, a la the manga, and also, even more importantly, internal coherent sense. When I watched e.g. Hanadan2, I never either wondered WTF they were doing what they were doing, or switched ships because the canon ship made no sense.

And that's another complaint: the characters. Manga Makino is one of the most awesome heroines out there: strong, unyielding, unmopey, fiercely energetic, impossible to bully. Inoue Mao in the jdrama portrays it perfectly. And Barbie Hsu in the twdrama kicks it up a notch even more. Those are some fearsome ladies. And then we have Jandi. Whose toughness in the earlier eps has gone away entirely - who cannot say boo to the mean girls, let alone Darth Mama, who needs constant ridiculous rescuing (from a pool two feet deep!), who is mopey, weepy, and listless. She is lame and weak compared even to an good kdrama heroine (Chunhyang or Yu Rin or Ma Ja would wipe the floor with her in two seconds), not to mention the original source. Heck, even an average kdrama heroine (heroine of Who Are You or Which Star Are You From), not one with unusual amounts of spunk, could take her.

Also, Jun Pyo. We got rid of most of Domyouji's distinctive traits - the hugely troubling and uncontrolled violence. The dimness. Total unwaivering refusal to let go of Makino (in Hanadan2 I bought it barely, because it was brief, super-hard, and rather justified). He's become yet another tall, hot, and troubled kdrama hero. And the worst part? Unlike in twdrama and jdrama, he's had no learning curve about becoming human, he didn't have to work hard and hard and harder to get the girl to change her opinion - the bullying doesn't seem to matter, Jandi falls into his lap fairly quick.

Etcetcetc. I could rant for hours.

But one last comment - it took my reading people's posts to realize that the fiancee in a modest swimsuit hugging Jun Pyo from the back in the pool is the kdrama's equivalent of the seduction scene in the manga. WTF? I don't expect them to follow the manga and the twdrama and show her straddling him half-naked on the bed, but even the jdrama, much much more prudish though it was, had her on top of him in a bed. This pool thing is a seduction scene? Ahahahahahaaaa. LOL. Yeah.

Korea, you can adopt manga excellently well and make a great teen drama - see Goong! So WTF?

I have decided that it was about time for me to update and expand my favorite kdrama primer yet again (which I first did some months ago). Not only were there a bunch of kdramas I wanted to add to the list, but I wanted to rearrange the order of some of the dramas on the list already (except for the first three or so, the placement of the other ones within the rankings is fluid and moves based on my mood) and very much expand it.

So behind the cut are 25 of my favorite kdramas, with summaries, reasons why, pics and vids. I have tried to keep it as unspoilery as possible.

No kdrama I have not finished is on the list because I want to have seen the complete drama before evaluating the fave status. Also, I watch a lot of dramas, but I have hardly seen all or most kdrama out there, and there are some very famous ones I have never seen. I am always open to recs and am always looking for said recs.

Now, without too much further verbosity, Dangermousie's 25 favorite kdramas list, new and improved.

OMG, look at this awesome Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang MV I found:

Oh, how I love this drama!

It's so funny, heart-breaking, feminist, clever, with about the most awesome hero and heroine ever, post-modern, perfect.

You know, out of the four dramas the Hong Sisters did, I saw three and all three are in ky Favorite Kdramas list: My Girl, DGCH and Hong Gil-Dong. I've been saving Fantasy Couple because I didn't want to run out of their dramas but I am cracking up. I think it's my next kdrama (that or Fashion 70s, Stained Glass, or that revenge drama with Joo Jin Mo). Maybe I'll finally finish Hello Miss first though :) Or Robbers.

I watched ep 2 of The Devil and it is just as awesome and twisty and incredibly shot and gorgeously acted as ever. I like how we begin to see cracks in the characters' facades, too. The Rumpled Sexy Cop isn't just an adorable crime-solving goofball, but he can get worried, and devastated, and incredibly understatedly sweet (OMG, the bit with the flower pot for the Psychic Librarian). The Sexy Deadly Lawyer isn't just all hard surfaces and impenetrable armor, but someone who can be amused and touched (even if a little) by Psychic Librarian, and someone who can be hurt (the scene in the darkness with him burning the photograph, tears in his eyes). And Psychic Librarian is more than well-socialized cheerfulness. This isn't a gift she wants, and she can be giddy or mad or just plain awesome.

Anyway, unspoilery, IMO, caps from ep 2.

Ep 2 caps here )

In other news, I am sure that flisters are already know, but Japan is about to remake The Devil with Satoshi Ohno as the Lawyer and Ikuta Toma as the Cop. My one reaction is a horrified WTF. My God. That is so wrong on so many levels, I don't even want to start. Leaving aside the casting (because that is a whole other rant and would occupy too much space*), squishing 20 hour-long eps' worth of story into 10 45-minute ones is rather a disaster. Oh well, at least the kdrama TPTB will get $$$ out of it :P

* OK, I lied. Casting rant. I have never seen Ohno in anything, so for all I know, he is a genius. BUT. BUT. Ummm. Sorry. Joo Ji Hoon was so perfect for the role because he has this incredible iciness and because he looks so contained and aristocratic and inhuman in his perfection, but with that very hidden vulnerability which still makes you care even when you shouldn't and even as you are fraked out by him. I like JJH quite a lot, but I am not delusional. I can think of kdrama actors I think are better, in abstract (Lee Seo Jin, Bae Yong Joon etc etc). But he was perfect in/for this role. Heck, if they had to make a remake, I would think someone like Oguri Shun, not Ohno.

And don't even get me started on Ikuta Toma in Uhm Tae Woong's role. WTF! I know I am in a minority, but I dislike Ikuta Toma, and not just because he is so scrawny his chest is concave (shirtless Toma in Hana Kimi! Do not want! Makes me have famine nightmares!) I think acting-wise he is about as subtle as a brick, and, let's face it, I do think Uhm Tae Woong is an amazing actor, with quite a range, and Ikuta Toma is...well...not.

Now, if they cast KimuTaku and Fujiki Naohito, we are talking. I'd check it out of curiosity, if nothing else. But this? Pass, thank you.

Oh, and also, I had a blast last night watching Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang with [livejournal.com profile] tatterpunk. It's a drama which I adore. Eps 5-7 drag a bit, as I remembered, so we ffed through those. But soon, it will be awesome again!!!!

The spoiler for ep 17 of Hong Gil Dong (you know which one I mean) made me gleeful.

Also, here are pics (utterly unspoilery and promo) of KJH as HGD, looking beyond scrumptuous.

Also, because talking with [livejournal.com profile] alexandral made me remember how much I adored Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang, here is this gorgeous angsty DGCH MV:

Another adorable MV )

It also made me remember how much I hated Byun Hak-Do, the 'other guy' in it. I think he is my least favorite other guy ever. It took me forever to be able to watch Uhm Tae-Woong in anything else after that. So, since I thought I never ranted about him, here it is.

On why BHD invites the ire of dangermousie )

Oh, and it also reminded me that I want to finish Witch Yoo Hee. I adored it when it aired, but I usually have huge trouble with waiting for subs. Must finish now.

Here is a smoochy MV:
