"The fiery air of the sun regularly produces poison. The air is hot. The people living in the land of the sun are impetuous. The mouths and tongues of those impetuous people become venomous. Thus the inhabitants of Chu and Yue are impetuous and passionate. When they talk with others, and a drop of their saliva strikes their interlocutors, the arteries of the latter begin to swell and ulcerate. The southern commanderies are a very hot region. When the people there curse a tree, it withers, and when they spit on a bird it falls down dead."

(From a first-century text translated in the book on the Qin and Han empires by Mark Edward Lewis)

ROFL. It seems they don't need weapons or an army. They can just spit their enemies to death. Makes me think of Herodotus and some of his more outlandish descriptions.
