And JFC, this is really dark!!!

Also, really and surprisingly good - I had zero expectations other than maybe some amusing camp, but this is genuinely quality (so far).

Oh, and Lee Min Ho's adopted father, I sort of want to dismember you. CPS is yearning for your blood - Ninja Assassin is not supposed to be a 'parenting for dummies' guide. Accomplish your freaking revenge yourself, psycho! With that background, the main character doesn't need a girlfriend, vengeance, or a good lawyer - what he needs is a decade or two of therapy instead.

Also, the little kid they picked to play childhood version of Lee Min Ho looks freakishly like him.

ETA: We have achieved Lee Min Ho! I have no idea what it is about him - objectively I've seen kdrama actors who are better-looking. But the man just burns the screen with charisma, whatever role he is in, even something as dull as his character in Personal Taste. And here, as this violent, devil-may-care, fiercely cheerful thug who hides any issues under an attitude - oh my.

You know - this is what I wanted Fugitive to be.

ETA2: Park Min Young! She's the daughter of the dude he rescued! And he's totally smitten with her picture! Awwwwww. Something bad is sure to happen in 1, 2, 3...

EAT3: THEY MAKING HIM KILL HIS MOTHER FIGURE ?!?!?!?!?! I have never wanted a drama parent figure dead as much as I do psycho kidnapper 'adopted' daddy. RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!! Oh, I see, Daddy is merely making sure he's good at target practice because there are things he's supposed to shoot all around her tied-up self and if he misses, she is dead. What, you couldn't just buy him a puppy and make him cook it, like a normal parental lunatic?

ETA3: Finished the ep.

That was frakking intense and, tbh, the best first ep of any kdrama this year. Bring it on!

So, year 2009 has been very good for me OTP-wise, providing many a drama OTP for me to swoon over.

But let's see how I did in the "happy ending for the OTP" stakes - do I go for the tragic ones that break my heart or fluffiness?

Here - obviously spoilers for endings of dramas in my tags )

Hmmm. 11/20 happy

OK, this isn't going to be even coherent because it's super late and I also watched the three last episodes of City Hall in a row but OMGOMGOMG it's going on my all-time favorites list.

In no order:

* The scene in the rain OMGOMGOMG I have to confess I bawled. But not as much as at the scene in her house. Must cap.

* When she tells him (in the restaurant) she will always love him, it's just guuuuuh - she is so dignified and yet also so open and it totally means everything to him because of his abandonment issues but he has to push her away.

* Mi Rae has the spine of steel and is brainy and competent and selfless and I love love love love her.

* Loved the resolution for the secondary OTP.

* I love that Mi Rae and Jo Guk didn't need to give each other detailed explanations.

* Fiancee remained awesome till the end.

* I screamed when Jo Guk pwned his daddy. I do love that he basically gave up on trying to please him or win him and got principles and ideals and goals and took the fight to him and won. He didn't need him any more, emotionally, because he had Mi Rae's unconditional love.

* BEST DRAMA PROPOSAL SCENE EVER.

* He stole her speech yet again heeeee heeeee heeeeee mad love. I would SO vote for him :P

* I want Mi Rae to be Mayor for life :)

* Flashback to that accidental phone call before they met. OMG why are you so good to me City Hall?

* "I want a man who would cry for me." EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

* JUST OVERALL OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG.

I had all sorts of metaish thoughts on eps 16-17 of City Hall but I am afraid most of them have fled after this scene:

The only reason I did not scream out loud was because it would wake up Baby Mousie.

NO WAY. NOWAYNOWAYNOWAY. Jo Guk kneeling and begging and totally abasing himself. To save Mi Rae. There is NO WAY. He is about the most proud person ever. Oh, God. This drama is just...*goes incoherent*

I am a total utter sucker for drama men kneeling to save someone they love or similar. I really need a list of those sorts of scenes (Tree of Heaven, Capital Scandal, Something Happened in Bali, My Girl what else...). This sort of broke my heart. Well, at least in this case it didn't end up with golfclubs, major injuries, and death threats against the guy's girlfriend, a la Bali (still the most dysfunctional kdrama romance and family ever).

Caps from my favorite scenes from eps 16-17, with comments )

If there is such a thing as shipper heaven, episode 15 of City Hall is it.

From the most perfect break-up I have ever seen (I totally cried a little - it's this break-up which is the most tender loving thing between them yet so far).

To the angst afterwards (we have never seen him cry before, have we? And I love that she broke up with him even though it makes her feel like this.)

To the inevitable they can't stay away from each other (he more than she!!!) despite knowing all the drawbacks and huge problems it's likely to cause (and even potentially end their careers).

To that rare-as-unicorns event, a drama bed scene! (their mouths are open and you can see tongue - Toto, we are not in Kansas any more :P Somewhere a BOF censor is having a heart-attack.)

In conclusion, budget reports never looked so fun!

Up through ep 14 of City Hall and it's such total love, honest.

I really don't like dramas (or any sort of long fiction) where the characters stay static and do not learn and I love that CH isn't like that - she teaches him idealism and he teaches her the nitty-gritty of politics. Which is perfect because to be a good politician, you need both. Without his lessons, she'd be an idealist who'd never get anywhere, let alone not be elected. Without her lessons, he'd be successful but soulless, seeking for meaning without knowing it - using success instead of true satisfaction. I think part of the arc of this drama is his finding validation within himself and not needing to substitute for the lack of same by craving love/approval of his absent father* And of course, she teaches him trust and love but he teaches her self-worth. They both had it all there but it needed to be brought out - she needed someone who'd help her believe in herself and he had plenty of belief in himself but he needed to have someone else believe in him, to function properly.

They are so perfect together. I especially love the constantly teasing vibe they have going on. And I love that they are both adult. It's so refreshing. Not to mention he is drawn to her because of her stubborness and her principles and her backbone. LOVE.

Side note: I know his fiancee was as popular in fandom as a case of leprosy but I like her. I would never want to be around her and I can't say she is a good person but (a)I love that the drama never demonizes her and (b) I admire her - she is someone who entered into an engagement that is basically a cold-blooded business arrangement on both sides (when she tells Jo Guk something to the effect of she does not care how and who he fools around with as long it doesn't jeopardize her chances to someday become First Lady, and she means it) and sticks to it - she doesn't fall for her betrothed, and anything she does to bust up his falling in love with Mi Rae has nothing to do with jealousy or evilness or whatever but pure ambition. If she thought he could have a sterling career and marry her (i.e. the fiancee), she wouldn't care if he had a dozen Mi Raes. I sort of admire that. And I admire that the drama never presents her as evil for it.

But I can tell angst is about to hit for our lovers! I can feel it. You can't have both a successful career in politics and emotional entanglement like they are having. Not to mention, they both know that if they ended up on different sides of an issue, and she believed her position was righteous, she would fight even him.

* who should die in a fire, btw. For many reasons, the latest being the little surprise dinner. Duh, of course one should totally invite one's unacknowledged son to lunch and then spring his girlfriend on him there too, and then tell her while the guy has to listen that she should dump the guy because otherwise he is going to make her political life very difficult and telling her to choose between her constituents and her boyfriend. While said boyfriend basically has to sit there and listen to his father try to treat him like a puppet again. WTF? I love Mi Rae's reaction btw - she is so awesome.

Some ridiculously awesome shippiness from ep 13-14 )

Not related, but look at my yummy lunch:

Blurry pic of side dishes )

ETA: the scene with Jo Guk and his father in ep 15 OMGOMGOMGOMG. So much YES. And when he tells him he is going to break it off with fiancee and leave his father stranded for political money because "it's in my blood" OMGOMGOMGOMG so much love.
