1. There are so many awesome Pi Li MIT mvs out there. Have another one.

I feel a twdrama kick coming on. I find some of them too OTT for my tastes but when they do it for me, they do it in a way no other dramas do (my first two dramas ever were twdramas, I believe I imprinted).

2. It's official, I finally gave up on Cinderella Unni - I am never catching up on it - no interest. There is very little romance, it's primairly family-based drama and there are few things that bore me more than family melodramas. Sorry, CU, it was fun in the beginning but then you turned out to be different from what I wanted.

I am going to restart Cinderella Unni. I have 7 eps to catch up on, yikes!

But it looks sooooo good now.

A picture of a certain hug is not influencing me at all. At all.

All you guys who told me Stairway to Heaven was depressing totally lied! I mean, sure, I started crying two minutes into episode 7 and poor Hero and Heroine have enough angst for a small Siberian village (I cannot wait for Heroine to regain her memory. My wishful scenario is for her to turn Buffy, enlist Hero to her cause, and then they go stake the rest of the cast and then cut off their heads).

BUT.

You guys have NO idea the amount of sheer unadulterated joy I get from watching Psycho Bitch and Sister Luster freak and panic and run around and worry about their crimes being exposed and suffer suffer suffer. I was literally laughing out loud at Sister Luster running around like a mad person because Heroine wouldn't take his calls, being busy celebrating Hero's birthday and getting almost kissed. Ahahahahahahaha in your face! I wish I could get a videotape of Hero and Heroine getting it on and mail it to you and make you watch it, you nasty gargoyle freak! Psycho Bitch's almost cartoon panic is even better. Every time I see her lose it, I experience almost transcendent joy.

Also, if you were Heroine, who would you pick?

Hideous as sin stepbrother who basically kidnapped you, kept you away from friends, family, and boyfriend, lied to you about your true identity and past, lied to you that you are his girlfriend to get in your pants and has generally behaved in subhuman fashion? Also, he stole Farrah Fawsett's hairdo.

Or a sexy rich guy who is your best friend and boyfriend who is madly devoted, gives you presents on his birthday, is fun and intense, and probably is good in bed. Also a plus -is not evil or insane.

Ahhh, dilemmas, dilemmas.

You know my mad enjoyment of Stairway to Heaven finally made me realize something - I adore kdrama melodramas so much but only when the melodrama in question is a strongly romantic - where the story revolves around Love That Cannot Be. I mean, an average ep of StH has more romantic moments than an entire season of an American show. And all my favorite melodramas (StH, Tree of Heaven, A Love to Kill, Beautiful Days, Winter Sonata, Spring Waltz) are hyper-focused on the love story. OTOH when it's a family-oriented melodrama, I lose interest. In the melodrama context, I am only interested in romance. This is why, e.g., I don't like MiSa as much as the melodramas mentioned above - the ratio of romance to family issues is much smaller - the family stuff takes a lot more space and so I check out. I think that is why Cinderella Unni stopped interesting me after the first 4 eps (which were, significantly, more romance-centric than the subsequent eps). CU is well-written and well-acted melodrama but it's not a romantic melodrama. Any romance in it isn't over-present - the drama focuses on family dynamics. And that's something I am not as interested in at all.

ETA: ARGH ARGH HERO'S HORRIBLE AWFUL MOTHER DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE. Oh boy, StH is giving me emotions a hell of a work out.. DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE YOU UNEARTHLY BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of catching up on my ginormous backlog, I have been rewatching parts of Personal Taste ep 10 and taking come caps. I am not even in the mood to watch anything else, no matter how good. I just want to wallow in PT.

I am obsessed with this drama. OBSESSED. It is definitely my drama of the spring season to me - by now I have achieved this absolute emotional immersion that is my goal in drama watching but doesn't happen all too often. I get incoherent, I get giddy, and rageful, and happy, and sniffly. Perfect, perfect.

Especially ep 10 which was such an emotional hothouse - yes, I love dramas because they turn me into an emotional vampire. MMMMM.

Some thoughts and caps of ep 10 )

Of course, all this rewatching forced me to confront the fact that I will never get through my backlog - i.e. there is no way I can keep up with 8 airing dramas. It's not doable, especially since Kimura's Moon Lovers (Tsuki no Koibito) starts next week and there is no way in hell I am not following that one as it airs. Nine airing dramas? No way.

So some major pruning is occurring:

Keeping for Weekly Viewing:

Personal Taste; Prosecutor Princess; Sunao No Narenakute - These three dramas I am obsessed about. I am not giving them up for anything.

Oh My Lady - OML is easy to keep up with since I skip all the scenes not involving the OTP or the cute kids. I am not as in love with it as I am with the three up top but it's fun.

Keeping, Maybe:

Yankee-kut to Megane-chan - subs for this are irregular so I am considering just waiting until it's done. But will see.

Dropping:

Down with Love - let's face it, I am 10 eps behind, the drama is almost done, I might as well wait until it's all done and marathon. Especially since I prefer downloadable subs to viikii ones for this so I can ff through parts that do not interest me and those subs are rather behind so it will be a while until they will be completed.

Dong Yi: - I am 6 or 8 eps behind (depending on whether you count raws or subbed). I might as well give up for now. Once the spring drama season is over, I can catch up and DY is so long that it will still be running then and once I catch up, I can just join the weekly watching again.

Cinderella Unni: I am less than 3 eps behind which is nothing but I don't want to catch up. All the main characters seem to have become permanent residents of Miseryville which wears down on one after a while. I have made a discovery that while I can watch most other genres as airing dramas, I cannot do it with melodramas. I prefer to have all my angst-emo-melo in one big, controlled by me, gulp and not in weekly dribs and drabs (see Will It Snow at Xmas, another excellent melodrama, that I tried to follow as it aired, had to give up, but really enjoyed marathonning after). So I'll catch up with CU once it's done.

I had some time this weekend so I ended up watching ep 7 and half of ep 8 of Cinderella Unni and it's official - these people should be lining up for a shrink yesterday.

It's an excellently written, acted, and filmed drama whose characters are sinking into quiet miserable dysfunction at a great rate of speed. They are all understandable and fascinating but the only one I actually find sympathetic and likeable is Jung Woo which is sort of a problem as none of the three main characters are called Jung Woo :P

Eun Jo, Hyo Sun and Ki Hoon are all complex, layered and beautifully acted. And I want to smack the hell out of all of them. Or, even better, send them to therapy and leave them there for about five years. They are miserable themselves, they are making each other miserable, and just I want them to snap out of it already or go their separate ways.

Eun Jo's ability to emotionally express herself or to allow herself to be loved is equal that of a plank. Hyo Sun is weak, immature, and frighteningly self-centered. Ki Hoon is taking out his issues on everyone and is so sunk in self-loathing that he's ready to get his deep-sea-diving certificate. It all makes 100% sense and it's all very dreary to watch. They all need to be on different continents from each other.

I am pretty sure this will have a happy ending (all of the writer's previous works do) but I cannot even ship Eun Jo/Ki Hoon for now because these individuals should not be inflicted on each other (or any other romantic partner), not without a heck of a lot of healing and change. I cannot imagine them as a functional entity right now, at ALL.

I am curious how much more screwed up they will all get before it gets better. If it ever will.

When Eun Jo was the only main character who was broken, I could cope. I didn't realize how much I'd miss Hyo Sun's clueless sunniness and Ki Hoon's steady warmth before they were gone, to be replaced by more and more misery.

You guys, I am so in love with Sunao ni Narenakute - I have finished the episode and if it keeps this up, it's going on my all-time favorites list. I am more of a kdrama girl than a jdrama one, but almost nothing can compare with a jdrama done right.

Before a few comments on second half of first ep (behind cut), I just want to point out that at least two of the five main characters would have legal recourse out of their horrible situations if they were in the United States.

Poor Seonsu. I wanted to go in there and shred that horrible person's face. What kind of boss pours a cup of water on his employee's head and belittles and insults him in front of everyone? This is a textbook case of workplace harassment and racial discrimination as Seonsu is Korean. Hello, lawsuit in the US! He'd win pretty easily, too.

And speaking of textbook, hello Kaoru's situation! This is like an example from a lawbook of what sexual harassment looks like! When your boss tells you she will fire you or demote you if you don't become her boytoy? Case over - though he should probably get some incriminating emails first.

Not to mention Hikaru's situation with her lousy boyfriend refusing to return her calls now that she may be pregnant. She should sue him for child support if she is :)

OK, this drama is making me lawsuit-happy, but seriously, I was watching this and going - GET A LAWYER, LADY AND GENTS! :P

But sadly they live in Japan.

More caps and thoughts of non-litigious nature )

Now that I've checked out all the Spring dramas I planned to except for Yankee-kun to Megane-chan (because I am shallow and will give anything with Narimiya Hiroki at least a staring chance), I have a ranking.

But first a Yankee-kun trailer (it's a drama, I believe based on a manga I read and liked) about a formerly good student who became a delinquent (NH) and a former delinquent and now class president who decides to straighten him out.

Shiiiiip!

Now back to the rankings. I think my ranking in order of preference is:

1. Sunao ni Narenakute
2. Prosecutor Princess - it's fluffy and hilarious and romantic and emo and has a little mystery and I just adore it to ridiculous bits, even more than Cinderella Unni (blasphemy, I know!)
3. Cinderella Unni - excellent drama but it's so emo and everyone is so miserable, I may be putting it on hiatus for a few weeks. It's spring out and also there are stressful things in my own life going on, so I want something more mellow and less melo to buck me up.
4. Oh My Lady - not a masterpiece but I have silly fun watching it
5. Personal Taste - after a rough first 4 eps, gotten better and is pretty enjoyable now, with a bit of judicious fast-forwarding.
