So, year 2009 has been very good for me OTP-wise, providing many a drama OTP for me to swoon over.

But let's see how I did in the "happy ending for the OTP" stakes - do I go for the tragic ones that break my heart or fluffiness?

Here - obviously spoilers for endings of dramas in my tags )

Hmmm. 11/20 happy

This is yet another in my series of "Dangermousie ranks all the kdramas she has ever seen" posts. (I have seen over 70 kdramas and, being addicted to ranking, have decided to rank them all). For previous posts go here. Below the cut are dramas ranked 42-30: these range from dramas I like a lot to dramas I love. All of them have flaws that keep them from higher rankings but all of them are dramas I would have no hesitation in recommending. Once again, I have either finished these dramas entirely or finished enough to make up my own mind.

Best friends, warrior princesses, single mothers, and nuns: if you do not like their stories, the heroines of these dramas will cut off your heads and then pray over the bodies )

Until next time :)

Since this is Friday, the drama of the day for me was Cain and Abel, the revenge/love story starring So Ji Sub and Han Ji Min. I started it a long time ago and now I've picked it up again with ep 4.

If you are familiar with kdramas, you know what to expect from anything starring So Ji Sub - an angst pie with a number of angst toppings (Sorry I Love You is arguably the most depressing kdrama ever). The shock of C&A is not all the torture So Ji Sub's sweetie of a surgeon goes through, but the fact that he's alive to enjoy his OTP at the end.

Here is the set-up for ep 4:

Cho In (So Ji Sub) is a Korean surgeon who goes to China on a holiday. Sweet and well-adjusted (yeah, it's a SJS drama, he won't stay this way for long), he wants to spend some time attending a conference and treating some village kids. It's all very rewarding, especially since he manages to also save the life of his awesome tour-guide, a North Korean refugee trying to earn enough to smuggle the rest of her family out, but he can't wait to get home to his loving fiancee and his idolized older brother. WELL. That might happen if it wasn't for the fact that his Stepmother makes Domyouji Mama seem like Mother Teresa - horrified by the prospect that this adopted kid might inherit everything in the family instead of her own biological son, she arranges to have Cho In kidnapped and disposed of -the thugs drag terrified Cho In into the desert and shoot him, leaving him to slowly die...

Enter here for manpain, manpain, and more manpain. Did I mention MANPAIN? Ep 4 caps )

It's odd how unbothered I am by something that bothered me just a few days ago - remember my ranting about Min Gook in Lawyers of Korea, almost to the point of giving up the drama? Oddly, any irritation I had totally went away, and it's not as if I watched much more (I have still only seen 4 eps). All of a sudden, I really can't wait to watch more - it seems I am content to treat his past behavior in his past marriage as an unhealthy way of lashing out at his (then) wife's coldness and trust that he will learn to be more human in the future - for some reason that explanation just clicked and I want to see how it will be accomplished. So, more Lawyers tonight, yay!!!! (Even if a part of me can't help but wish I'd watch a drama about exes broken apart by evil family which reconnect - but I guess I could watch Phoenix or The Kid From Heaven or even 18vs29 for that).

Also, [livejournal.com profile] drama_hunt made me remember that I never finished Cain and Abel, the delicious, gorgeous revenge drama starring So Ji Sub and Han Ji Min (as a woobie surgeon left for dead who tries to recover his memories and get revenge on those who put him in that state and a pucky North Korean refugee girl). I loved the first 5 eps as they were airing but stopped because I wanted to make sure it ended in the way I wanted it too. It did, so I'll continue with it now.

Here is a shippy MV:

Looking for a kdrama after BOF is over? Check out Cain and Abel! It has everything: revenge, angsty love, sibling rivalry, evil families, amnesia, major manpain, pretty cinematography, twisty plot. Oh, and above all So Ji Sub and Han Ji Min. Whoever thought to cast the two of them as leads has my undying love because...seriously. OMG. I love them.

Here is an unspoilery general MV I found featuring four main characters:

1. While the makers of BOF seem terrified that anything other than its leads imitating dead fish while kissing or even, God forbid, holding hands, would bring down Korean law and order, Return of Iljimae, also currently airing, has no problems with scenes like this between the unmarried OTP of the drama. Ahhh, the humanity!

I feel depraved already!

Joking aside, The Return of Iljimae is criminally overlooked. For my money (all $5 of it), RoI is the best kdrama not only of 2009 so far, but all of 2008 as well. I know it sounds pretentious, but it's that rare beast - drama as art. But it doesn't lose any entertainment value for it. And if you don't like streaming on viikii, the first ep came out with excellent and downloadable subs already so you can watch it in HD. Come on, period drama about growing into adulthood, revenge, justice, and love. How could you not want to watch it?

2. I have been following Princess Ja Myung Go (also being subbed on viikii, but you can dl first ep with subs in HD at aja-aja.com) and I love it. It is also the most woman-centric drama I have ever seen - all period dramas I have come across have strong female characters, but I have never seen one with such a female focus. A word of advice to evil backstory King though - perhaps it would be easier to keep your chief general loyal if you didn't order him to off both his daughters on basis of a rather shaky prophesy. I'm just saying, he's the guy with the troops!

3. I have also been watching Cain and Abel - am still only on ep 4 because I am watching so many things at once, but I really really like it. The word that comes to mind the most when thinking about it is how competent it is - competently written, directed, acted. Especially when contrasted with something like BOF which has the air of by the seat of its pants.

Because I have the attention span of a gnat, I've decided to add another drama to all the ones I am watching (which are BOF, Princess Ja Myung, Cain & Abel, To Get Her, Meteor Garden rewatch, My Boss My Hero, Resurrection, Wish To See You Again and Love Storm). The drama in question? The Japanese drama Akai Ito.

Here is an adorable MV for it.

I have high hopes for it because it's based on a cellphone novel and the last cellphone novel drama I've seen was Koizora which gave us bleached-blond hair, snow babies, quasi-gang-rape, evil exes, dying boys, and every other cheesy thing known to man, woman, or beast.

I have no idea if Akai Ito can live up to that high standard, but I am hoping the hero and heroine will turn out to be siblings. It has to be either that or terminal illness, and terminal illness has already been covered by Koizora...

(2)

I have only one thing to say about the scene in the desert with Choi In in ep 3 of Cain and Abel. That was beyond brutal. Oh, man. Ahhh, the joys of a So Ji Sub drama - I'd forgotten. I have no idea of the plot of C&A (I mean, I know the set-up, but I have no idea how it will go) but I sincerely hope he will eventually track down the director and stepmom who ordered this and make them pay. And pay. And pay. Preferably with rusty nails involved. (Side note: I love a good revenge drama: Green Rose, Resurrection, Mawang, A Love to Kill).
