1. I was hoarding Qing Shi Huang Fei, but it seems the subbers are almost done, so I've started gobbling it up and am on ep 12. Mmmmmm. Episode 10, especially, was pretty much tailor-made for every hurt/comfort kink I had. Let's see, the sequence of events was as follows:

* Imperial Mother doesn't want Ruby to marry her feckless crown prince kid and, pissed off, orders her beaten almost to death so she'd confess who snuck her into palace.
* Yan Kuan volunteers for beat-down duty because, if not, Ruby is going to get killed for real.
* Ruby is taken out and it's not sure she's going to live, so Yan Kuan spends all night standing not movinh in a torrential downpour (what is with drama heroes, and their obsession with penumonia?), then his servant shows up in the morning, and is all 'she's going to live, now pls tell me, you didn't stay out like this all night, Queen Mum might hate you but she'll still have my head if you keel over." Yan Kuan manfully says he's fine, only to promptly collapse in a heap (I was counting to it in my head).
* He gets off his sickbed to convince Ruby to leave the palace by pretending he doesn't want to use her in his plan any more. She's duly pissed.
* Then servants come to beg her help because she's healer supreme and Yan Kuan is pretty much dying because during her beatdown she only got superficial injuries which means he absorbed the inner force of the blows into himself (wtf, wuxia medicine, do you ever make sense? Oh well...I still remember Return of Condor Heroes where the protagonists spent most of the time poisoned from one thing or another). So she goes to treat him and is all "OK, fine, internal injuries I get, but why does he have a cold on top?" and servant is all "well..."
* Yan Kuan comes to and is all "go away, I hate you blah blah blah" and when Ruby points out the injuries, he snarls that if he knew it would happen he'd have killed her, and when she points out the rain stunt, he's all "I wanted to make sure you'll keel over and take my secrets with you" to which she pretty much responds "whatever, stop being a brat, shut up, and let me hand-feed you." LOLOLOLOL. That is how you do 'icy bastard melted by plucky good girl' trope, dramas!

Have a cute scene I haven't gotten to yet but soon will :)

2. I have also checked out the first episode of War of Desire, a Tang Dynasty drama starring Zhang Han (mmmm), Zheng Shuang and Bai Bing, as three friends who get torn apart by intrigue when Bai Bing gets taken into the imperial harem.

From what I can tell, ZH starts the drama in love with Bai Bing, but ends up with Zheng Shuang, which is as it should be, as they were Mainland Domyouji and Makino. Anyway, the first episode is a good introductory one. It does not have the polish or budget of QSHF (let alone, Bu Bu Jing Xin or similar), but it seems to be a solid drama with the usual cast of creepy politicking people. The three-corner friendship is the big draw here for me, because while I like the cast, none of them are major favorites of mine as is the case with the Ruby-Yan Kuan-Wallace triumvirate of QSHF or the drama I am going to talk about next.

3. Ah, another drama I checked out - The Royal Harem with Ady An and Feng Shao Feng. I believe it's set during the Ming times. Ady is a royal maid and FSF a musician.

It has received decidedly mixed reviews, but as I am watching this solely for the gorgeous costumes and my love for Ady and FSF alone and as a combo, I was very satisfied with the first two eps. It's not exactly challenging but it's a fun fun drama. (This reminds me I need to finish Four Women. It's just I stopped at relatively happy place and am dreading going forward).

4. I looooove Minguo period sets and costumes. So another drama I checked out is currently-airing Hidden Intention - in it, a young woman is haunted by leaving her younger sister at a market years ago. All of a sudden this younger sister appears, all grown-up, and bewitches the family. But is she who she says she is? The first episode was gorgeously atmospheric and I cannot wait to find out various secrets.

Plus, Luo Jin is the male lead. Bloody finally!

5. I saw the trailer for Beauties of the Emperor and ahahahahahhaaaaa so bad. I don't even mind any more because we are getting a proper take in Chu Han Contention, but seriously. So. Bad.

So, I've been perusing the stills of the upcoming Beauties of the Emperor and my thoughts could be summed up as follows:

1. Really gorgeous outfits.
2. I cannot tell the female leads apart at all. Like, I literally have no idea whether in any given still, Ming Dao is with Empress Liu or Consort Yu. That's going to be problematic if I watch the drama.
3. The thought of Xiang Yu and Empress Liu being an OTP in this version makes me want to roll on the floor howling. The equivalent would kinda be Wellington and Empress Josephine getting it on. Do not want. Breaks my brain. Trust Yu Zheng to break up a legendary historical OTP for some complete insanity (WHERE IS MY XIANG YU/CONSORT YU, DAMMIT! WHY ARE YOU BEING REPLACED BY SOME SORT OF ANCIENT TAKE ON IDOL TWDRAMA, WTF!!!!!)
4. Ugh.
5. And yet I still may check it out because HALLO THERE SEXAY SEXAY LIU BANG!!!! I am going to be rooting for ya in this civil war, baby! Never thought Liu "lemme throw my kids out of my carriage so I can run away faster" Bang would be so hot.

Caps caps caps. For the love of holy, help me figure out which woman is which! )

I think I am gonna need that upcoming Feng Xiao Feng/Crystal Liu movie as Xiang Yu/Consort Yu to scrub my brain with after this.

I am not one of Yu Zheng's antifans (loved JPLH, liked Red Rouge and Four Women, thought Schemes of Beauty was OK) but this...good Lord! Yikes. Liu Bang better run around naked for half the story, is all I am saying.

So, the poster featuring the four leads of Beauties of the Emperor has been released.

My eyes!!! My eyes!!! I cannot unsee this Photoshop Horror so I shall share my misery with you.

This is by far the worst drama poster I have seen in years, crossing from 'uninspired' straight into 'make it stop, dear God, make it stop!!!' territory. When I compare this with the gorgeous concept posters, I want to weep.

Let's start with our protagonist Xiang Yu. Now, I have never liked Ming Dao, but even then, the poor man deserves better than this - I don't find him attractive but never before have I thought of him as a gargoyle. His head and neck are much too small for his body and photoshopped at an odd angle - has Xiang Yu's vanishingly scrawny neck proven too feeble to hold his tiny head and just broke?

The ladies fare slightly better, except for the unnatural frozen expressions, which miss 'alluring' by about a mile or dozen. Also, while I have no idea if Lu Zhi was supposed to be beautiful, she was supposed to be powerful and smart and fearsome, but Chen Qiao En looks about as scary as a kitten. Consort Yu was a legendary beauty but to even call her actress attractive would be stretching it quite far. Yikes. Are there no beautiful ladies in China? Or are they all allocated to other productions?

Oh, but at least I'd totally go for this version of Liu Bang, greasy hair and all. Which statement sums up the wrongness of the whole poster and casting endeavor clearer than anything else ever could.

P.S. For all I know, the drama will turn out good, horrific poster notwithstanding. But when I think that Yu Zheng is making Xiang Yu and Lu Zhi into star-crossed lovers, something funny happens to my stomach and my eyes start a self-appointed roll. Hegemon-King Turns Into a Frog is NOT the drama I am looking for. I am a YZ-drama fangirl and his disregard for history doesn't usually bug me too much, but even I draw a line somewhere.

Head to hanjae's lj for more detail, but have you ever dreamed you are going to get Feng Shao Feng as Xiang Yu, Crystal Liu as Consort Yu, and Leon Lai as Liu Bang? Because you are getting it!!!!! In an upcoming movie White Vengeance? Oh, why is not in my hands already????

Oh, how hot and gorgeous will FSF/Crystal Liu be? OMG. And with battles and tragedy and costumes and...ummm, is it wrong to find Liu Bang sexy too? Because Leon Lai does it for me in a major way. ILY, Emperor Gaozu - ok, I felt v.v. weird even typing that.

Am extra amused because it means FSF gets to be Xiang Yu regardless of Yu Zheng's wishes in the matter.

Also, not that I am complaining - I am a majorly happy camper - but why the rash of Xiang Yu-Liu Bang movies/dramas lately? In addition to this and Yu Zheng's drama with Ming Dao, there is also an upcoming movie with Yang Mi (who is presumably portraying neither Xiang Yu nor Liu Bang), called Last Banquet (also as per my cstuff guru hanjae).

Let the best Xiang Yu win!!! :)

This is also an odd coincidence because I am currently reading Mark Edward Lewis' "The Early Chinese Empires: Qin and Han" and it has this hilarious (to me) passage about Liu Bang:

As a youth, Gaozu refused to work in his family's business and instead spent his time drinking and carousing with similarly inclined friends. During his rise to power, Gaozu even tried to throw his own children out of a carriage to aid his escape. When his father was taken prisoner by Xiang Yu and threatened with being boiled and eaten (DM: wtf? Boiled, fine, but why eaten? Surely they had some chickens or pigs), Gaozu asked to share the soup. After becoming emperor, he richly rewarded a follower who persuaded Gaozu's father (dm: guess they didn't eat him, after all) to serve as a subject in Gaozu's empire, since there could be only one sun in the sky.
Gaozu's lack of connection to his family (dm: worthy husband of Lu Zhi, it seems) and place of origin stands in stark contrast with that of his chief rival, Xiang Yu...Advised that, having occupied and sacked the Qin capital, he should make his own capital there, Xiang Yu insteasd chose to return to Chu, rule in his home, and enfeoff his allies across the north of China. "To become rich and famous and then not go back to your old home is like putting on an embroidered coat and going out walking in the night. Who would know about it?" (Dm: my fear in walking in fancy clothes at night would be getting mugged, not unnoticed, but then am not fearsome hegemon-king). He could not leave his old home for the sake of an empire. Gaozu could, and so he triumphed."

I wish I could find an entire book in English on Liu Bang and Xiang Yu's struggle. Would be fascinating. Oh well.
