1. The first teaser for Moon that Embraces the Sun is out.

Whenever I see a trailer full of only sageuk kids, my first instinct is to run. At this point, it will take a miracle for me to watch this.

2. Out of possibly terminal stupidity, I decided to check out Goong S. Surely it can't be as bad as everyone says, thought I. I thought wrong. The horrifying leads cannot act and have no chemistry and the screenplay was written by a tree. This might possibly be the worst kdrama I've ever seen - it's not even campily bad, just a horrifying time-waste conduit.

3. I also checked out the cdrama Splendid Life, a cdrama remake of Brilliant Legacy. Jerry Yan is a long drink of cool water but this is pretty much word-for-word remake so I don't see the point of watching once I've seen the original.

4. Goong S was clearly not enough to satisfy my inner masochist, because driven by a PadamPadam-inspired bout of Jung Woo Sung love, I decided to give Athena: Goddess of War another chance. I thought seeing that now I know it was just loud, slick, soulless action thing, I could enjoy it better due to adjusted expectations. We'll see. Have a pretty MV:

5. Watching Tree with Deep Roots got me quite interested in Sejong. Anyone know if 2008 drama Great King Sejong is subbed? I am not sure if I have the fortitude to sit through 80+ eps but I have been watching subbed clips of it on youtube with a great deal of enjoyment, concentrating on the dysfunctional royal family ones. Apparently, )at least according to the drama) before making Sejong's wife Queen, Taejong had her Daddy executed, the rest of her family demoted to lowest ranks, and eight concubines 'donated' to Sejong, all so that no woman would have much influence. That must have made for an interesting marriage for Sejong and wife...

As you probably realized by the conspicuous lack of any Athena-related posts, I haven't been following that drama at all.

Simply put, I was bored to death by the first episode (I don't remember the last time with a major drama where I ended the first ep without having a single moment that grabbed me or a single character that made me interested to at least check out ep 2). I was so bored, I never even felt the desire to check out ep 2, and that despite the fact that I adore Jung Woo Sung, Lee Ji Ah and Cha Seung Won, and that its thematic predecessor, IRIS, went on my all-time favorite list.

JWS' character was just blandly dull, Su Ae was a sociopath (I have seldom disliked a leading lady like that from the start but she really fits the textbook definition), the same was true of Cha Seung Won, and Lee Ji Ah didn't even appear. Plus, the pacing was molasses-slow and JWS and Su Ae lacked any chemistry whatsoever.

But now, [livejournal.com profile] algelic, posted the below amazing vid and about how CSW and LJA's characters end up hooking up for manipulation reasons but develop feelings, and I am tempted enough to give it another try:

I only wish whoever made that vid, made the drama, too. Now, that would be a drama worth watching. Oh well, since that's not to be - my wish - in the alternate universe, get rid of Su Ae, give Jung Woo Sung a good drama to show off his acting chops in, and leave this one to CSW and LJA to develop some sexy dysfunction. Please.

Anyway, am about to go for try n2. I hope it's less emotionally dead than it seemed from ep 1.

Watched Athena ep 1 (subs are out) and was, frankly, underwhelmed.

At more than one point I found myself multitasking and doing something else. It's entertaining enough for me to watch more of, but it's hardly must-see TV.

A few disclaimers before I delve into why I am not yet Athena fangirl. I came into this not expecting this to be related to IRIS in much (I was happy it wasn't. I did not want a sequel - I thought the ending of IRIS, brutal as it was, fit perfectly), but I did come to it as a rabid IRIS fangirl. IRIS was my drama of 2009, in my top 5 kdramas of all time, and probably one of the two most intense emotional drama experiences I've ever had (the other one being The Myth). IRIS is, in many ways, my perfect kdrama - the intensity, the descent into hell, the romance, the colors, and above all Lee Byung Hun's amazing performance. Hyun Joon is my favorite kdrama hero, ever. Bar none. So this is what I like. If, OTOH, IRIS left you cold, Athena may fix whatever bugged you about the former. (Or make you as disinterested as IRIS did, no idea).

The other disclaimer - I like the rest of the Athena cast but I think Su Ae has no screen presence whatsoever. None. I've seen her in two dramas prior to this - Emperor of the Sea and 9 End 2 Outs, and in both she could have been replaced by a photogenic cut-out and nobody would have noticed. OTOH, I really loved Kim Tae Hee in IRIS - she may not win an Oscar any time soon, but she does have oodles of star charisma, chemistry, and warmth.

So take the below for all it's worth to you.

1. The first half-an-hour bored me to tears. Why am I supposed to care about extraction of some scientist I've never met and a cast of characters most of whom die within that half-an-hour? Jung Woo Sung doesn't even appear in the first half, and neither do most of the other main characters. Being thrown into the middle of the action can be fun but only if there are stakes for protagonists and exciting things happen. Talking about a nuclear reactor isn't it.

2. Su Ae. I think she has zero charisma or chemistry with either JWS or Cha Seung Won, but what's worse is I loathe her character. I am all for tarnished and complex characters but she makes Kim So Yeon of IRIS seem like a boyscout as she was at least carrying out what she thought was her patriotic duty (also KSY is a heck of a lot a magnetic actress than Su Ae). I am supposed to root for a member of a terrorist organization who kills and tortures agents? I don't think so. Every time she appeared in the second half of the ep and JWS tried to court her, I wasn't amused or caring, I just rolled my eyes irritated at this storyline - a female Jack the Ripper isn't my thing, nor is she a suitable object for a courtship. At the very least, the makers should have not revealed her evil (if they were going to go that way and make her this way) but either hid it until the end or showed a gradual progression. As it is, I think she's a criminal killer and traitor and should be locked up. Way to make me care for the love story, drama! Oh, I know, she is going to reform for the love of JWS. Don't make me barf, drama! I am all for love reforming a troubled bad boy or girl but there is quite a difference between a bad girl and psycho killer. "Oh, my bad, I love a good guy, so I'll be good now" is as repentance-less and idiotic as it could get. So what, I guess it's lucky your chosen one wasn't a cannibal or arms runner. Overall, it's like a gender-reversed relationship TOP had with the computer analyst in IRIS and we all remember how well it went.

3. Intensity of IRIS is missing. It feels like Korean James Bond. Which is fine if you like that, but the reason I loved IRIS was its gritty intensity. JWS is an amazing actor but so far he's been given little to work with. I am withholding my judgment because Rome wasn't built in a day, and hope the makers won't waste having him and actually give him some heavy lifting to do. I want to love his character, I do - but soo far he's just a pretty image on the screen and I couldn't care less if he got ran over by a car. I was shaking about Hyun Joon by the middle of IRIS. I want to shake again. ETA: Watching ep 2 now and am beginning to care for JWS' character. Good.

4. Cha Seung Won is his excellent self but once again, sexy or not, a murderous evil psycho is not someone I am interested in.

Overall, it's not a bad drama but soul and heart seem to be missing. I will watch and hope it will get better. Now it's competent but fogettable 100%.

The poster for Athena: Goddess of War is out and it is, perhaps unsurprisingly, strikingly similar to that of its predecessor IRIS.

Compare IRIS:

And Athena (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] ockoala):

The same font, the same color scheme, the same composition, the same amount of people in the poster, the same vibe. Tortured Spy is front and center in both (of course) and we also have ladylike-yet-steely-and-kickass love interest to his right, plus Evil Nemesis, Kickass Female Ally, Hot Young Thing for Teenyboppers, and Experienced Character Actor Playing Ambiguous in both.

I am not big on copycat posters in general, but since Athena is an AU continuation of IRIS, I actually love the synchronicity. I am also glad to see the trailer and poster look intense. The previous stuff gave it more of a lightish Bond-type vibe and while there is nothing wrong with it, the reason I loved IRIS so (it's in my Top 5 kdramas of all time) was its teeth-gritting, tortured intensity. I am glad to see Athena isn't dispensing with it after all.

Hmmm, to compare the leading people, just for kicks:

Hero: Lee Byung Hun was what made IRIS for me. He's also my favorite Korean actor, so he wins this round. But this was a tough ne because Jung Woo Sung is frelling amazing and as Daisy and Musa demonstrate cane bring intense and tortured in spades. So winner is LBH for now. Who know how I will feel once the drama gets going.

Heroine: Kim Tae Hee hands down. I think she's gorgeous, I love her always playing tough/smart, I love her vibe and I think she's a decent actress. Su Ae, OTOH - I've seen her in two very different dramas (Emperor of the Sea and 9 End 2 Out) and she faded into woodwork into both of them. Not a fan. This said, I love her look in Athena and the vibe she has in the trailer, so hopefully she'll convert me.

Sexy Nemesis: Sorry, Jung Joon Ho, I will always love you as the feckless movie star in Last Scandal, but I am going to pick Cha Seung Won over you. He can do menacing and dark and sexy like nobody's business but your character sort of faded into woodwork in IRIS.

Tough Ally Lady: Draw. Kim So Yeon was unbelievable in IRIS but Lee Ji Ah portrayed my ultimate favorite female character in Legend where she was tough and funny and awesome and and and...

Hot Young Thing for Teenyboppers: Choi Siwon, duh. He can actually act. Sorry, TOP fangirls, I don't know if your boy can act, but he certainly didn't have to in IRIS.

Also, is it too early for the death poll? My predictions:

Lee Ji Ah: chance of death - 40% - Female tough ally doesn't get killed because, sadly, it won' torture the hero enough.

Jung Woo Sung: Chance of death - 60% - Hello, resident tortured agent here! The only reason it's not higher is because we've all seen IRIS and would they want to do the same ending twice?

Su Ae - chance of death - 75% - You know what would torture hero enough? If his one true love bought it at the end. I am putting Su Ae's odds pretty high because if Athena ends happily I'll eat my socks and since the female part of the OTP survived in IRIS, she is the more likely one to go in Athena.

Choi Siwon - chance of death - 80% - Eye candy is dispensable.

Cha Seung Won - chance of death - 95% - he's the bad guy. Good guys may perish but bad guys definitely will. The only reason he isn't getting a clean 100% is because of Athena's predecessor's grim nihilistic view - the real bad guys in that one escaped punishment and plan to strike again.

But enough about my blathering, how about you get to vote?

[Poll #1646361]

Now vote! Nekkid spies Jung Woo Sung and Su Ae want you to!

If his one true love bought it at the end. ockoala just posted the trailer on her blog.

Here it is:

All I can say (and I apologize for the language in advance):

Holy Fuck!

I want this so badly I am shaking. Literally.

IRIS is in my Top 5 dramas of all time and Athena looks like it won't disappoint as an AU/follow-up.

Thank you, drama Gods!

GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH.

P.S. [livejournal.com profile] ockoala, you don't have to worry, I know Jung Woo Sung is yours so I will do the ladylike thing and won't fight you for him. But ooooh boy, am I tempted! :P

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Sean Richard in Athena (stolen from dramabeans). So freaking gorgeous! (And unlike the fellow half-Caucasian actors Daniel Henney and Dennis Oh, he can actually act - I liked him in Jejoongwon).

How can one drama cram in so many good-looking guys in it? (Jung Woo Sung, Cha Seung Won, Choi Siwon, Sean Richard. Mmmmmmmmmmmm).
