Got back from a lovely weekend in NYC (pictures forthcoming). Friend who I was visiting and I went to the amazing Egyptian exhibit at the Met (Hatshepsut related).

Also watched more Saiyuki which continues to be excellent. The multi-parter where Goku reverted to his crazy, berserker self to save Sanzo was really good. But what really struck me was the mutual love between Sanzo and Goku (though I think slash writers for this pair are scary, since the vibe I am getting is father/son, and I am just as icked out as I am by the thought of Kara/Adama). Goku turning into a monster to save Sanzo is quite impressive (especially since this time, it was a conscious choice), and Sanzo coming out of his poisoning-induced coma (even though he shouldn't move, as the more he moves, the faster the poison spreads) is even more impressive, especially considering how closed off Sanzo is at his baseline. That whole scene with Sanzo facing the berserker Goku with his gun and telling him to come at him, and then as Goku charges, throwing his gun away is...wow. And then of course, all four of the guys (including the back-to-sanity-through-Sanzo's-skill Goku) are completely wounded and messed up and about to die (I love the bit where Hakkai thinks he can't drive because of internal injuries and Gojyo telling him he will drive instead). This show is big on h/c. I feel bad for Kougaiji being almost killed by Goku, but I don't feel TOO bad. I am sorry, if you challenge someone to a fight to the death, and tell them that if they win, they can have the transportation which their father figure needs to keep from dying (and you know that), you deserve whatever you get.

I love Sanzo waking up from his nightmares of being captured, and the thing that really terrifies him is being unworthy, being weak. I think it's the first time we've seen grown-up Sanzo really vulnerable. Keep it up, show, and he might even be as much of a favorite as Hakkai. I do love Hakkai comforting Sanzo and telling him he isn't. And I love that Hakkai knows that Sanzo is worried about Goku but would never admit it, so he tells him where Goku is, and Sanzo is all "I couldn't care less blah blah" and no one is fooled by it, not even Sanzo, and Sanzo admitting he is an idiot (re: caring for Goku). I think even though Goku is the only person Sanzo actually loves, Hakkai is the only person he can open up to. And of course, Hakkai feels guilty for not stopping Goku, but Goku feels even more guilty about his uncontrollable rampage (and I love that Gojyo cheers him up). And then Hakkai tells Goku Sanzo is awake, and Goku is terrified that Sanzo will be mad, but Sanzo comes in, all bandaged, even though he shouldn't be out of bed (he clearly wanted to see Goku but forget about admitting it) and quietly asks Goku for a can of beer (he is the worst invalid ever). And Goku wouldn't look at him and then they have this lovely moment and THEN Sanzo starts hitting him with his paper fan and yelling at him for being an idiot. And I love the bit at the end in Sanzo's room, where Sanzo is quietly reading the paper and Goku is perched on the chair, and everything is back to normal and Hakkai mentions that Goku managed to break through Sanzo's shell. Hmmmm. Love this. And Gojyo teasing and pissed off Sanzo shooting through the wall.

I love the next ep too, where they come across a village who sends a girl to a demon every year. And of course, Hakkai falshbacks to Kanan and he just can't allow it to happen and the rest of the gang won't leave Hakkai. I think he is forced to rescue 'Kanan' over and over again, always seeking some sort of expiation for arriving late (though it wasn't his fault). That scene when the girl goes to him "you've saved me" and he hugs her, with his hands shaking, and calls her 'Kanan' is heart-breaking.

Watched two more episodes of Saiyuki last night, one involving the gang rescuing Yaone, and one with the four sisters of doom (or some equally dramatic title). It keeps getting better and better. I love the sometimes different style: geographical patterns, odd colors, splashes of black and scarlet. It plays with the format, and so far, it works wonders.

I am also entirely too predictable, as my crushes in this one are Hakkai and Kougaiji, with Hakkai being the most favorite one. At least I am nothing if not predictable. I adore Sanzo (so no need to lob bricks at me, [livejournal.com profile] crumpeteer :P), but he just doesn't do it for me the same way.

Longish Saiyuki thoughts )

In other news, I saw another episode of Gawl which was good, but I had to stop, because the dub was driving me insane. The men were OK, but whoever was doing the heroine made me want to kill her: she sounded shrill and stupid and made me want to strangle her.

I also tried an ep of Sorcerous Stabber Orphen which I also liked just fine. No mad pash, but Orphen himself is kinda cool from the little I saw. The only thing is, please tell me he doesn't hook up with Cleo? I have rarely been as annoyed by a character as I am by her. Their first meeting takes place when (in a favorite scenario) she mistakenly thinks he's been peeping on her. So what does she do? She grabs Daddy's sword and tries to kill him. Repeatedly. While complaining he won't stand still. I don't know if it's supposed to be cute, but it comes across as bratty and psychotic. Other anime women who are violent, I don't have a problem with because hitting someone on the head is unlikely to be permanent. She is dreadfully annoying.

I keep wanting to make a long, long post on my Wodehouse crush, R. Psmith (who is witty, and intelligent and cool and actually has a heart, which is a Wodehouse rarity) but I am so lazy. Is anyone on the flist a Wodehouse fan?

Also, I started watching Generator Gawl which I like (Gawl looks a bit like Howl, oddly enough), but which is going to have the distinction of being the first series I watch dubbed, not out of any love for the dub itself (it seems OK enough, even if I find Gawl's voice a tad annoying) but because whoever subtitled this thought it was a good idea to leave half the dialogue out. This, while it leads to fun games of guessing 'what did he/she just say?' and trying to come up with the likeliest scenarios, has the disadvantage of leaving me hopelessly lost. Not to mention frustrated. And it also leaves some pretty important bits of info (like the fact that Gawl was made (aka not reallly human any more?) is one of the many times the subtitles decided to die).

Oh, and the scene in Saiyuki where Hakkai calmly started gouging his own eye out to the demon (from the clan he eradicated) who wanted him dead? And told him "you want to kill me? I don't really care for living anyway. Here, I'll start by giving you my right eye, and then my left and then my right ear and then..." as he was pulling out his eye. That man is SO fucked up. I also liked that the clan he killed because they delivered his OTP to the monster to rape and torture, was a clan that would have been allowed to live if they had done so. Because I don't blame Hakkai for going berserker on them, but I could understand their position too.

I am going to start to use "anime2" tage because the "anime" tag is way over a hundred entries and thuse anything really far back gets scrambled and inaccessible through tag system. In fact, I actually recoded a whole bunch, both to make 'anime' tag under a 100 entries so it could be searcheable, and to keep series together as much as possible (e.g. all Kenshin posts, even the really early ones, are now tagged 'anime2' and all FY posts, no matter how late, are tagged 'anime')

ETA: Damn. For some reason, even with retagging, my earlier anime entries don't show through the system. Argh! I coded them by series too, but it's annoying I can't pull up any of Escaflowne or Trigun and half of HYD by using the anime tag. Yes, I am anal, why do you ask?

Last night's ep (VM 2.19) was a good, solid ep. A pity first half of season was so lackluster, because the second one is quite good.

Thoughts on 2.19 )

And now non-spoilery speculation on Logan Logan Spec )

But the best part of last night's ep was the promo Thoughts on UPN's promo )

To completely switch gears, watched more Saiyuki eps last night. Sanzo's notion of hands-off parenting cracks me up, and I loved Gojyo cruising for women but getting stuck with the little girl and helping her out instead. The fact that Sanzo has a celestial credit card that he tells Hakkai to use because he isn't the one who has to pay it is priceless. I also started on the flashback arc which introduces how the four met, and so far I love it. I love Gojyo and Hakkai's bonding (and how badly was Hakkai wounded if he was unconscious for a week?). And Gojyo fighting Sanzo to protect this guy whose name he doesn't even know. I think he really saw similatrities between him and Hakkai (I love the bit where Hakkai talks about Kanan and he is horrified that he felt no premonition when she was taken aand tortured but was instead playing with his students). And I love Hakkai beating Goku and escaping, but only to complete whatever last thing he had to do, and then he'd come back for whatever punishment. And Gojyo saying that once Hakkai completes his task he will die because that's the kind of person he is to which Sanzo grumpily rejoins that he's been ordered to capture Hakkai so how does Hakkai dare die on his own good time? Heh. Hakkai's utter gentleness and complete deadliness is totally for meeeeeeee, because it's a huge kink of mine. I also love the similarities Sanzo sees between himself as a young boy and Goku, the whole 'why would enlightened Monk so and so take in this urchin?' I love it when he takes Goku with him on his trip. And they do have an explanation why the kid eats this much: he's been starved for years.

Off to watch Veronica Mars. And I am cranky, because my Peach Girl live action isn't here yet. Booooo.

I was also thinking about Saiyuki being so slash-prone. I can understand that, as you stick a number of attractive guys around who have no current love interest and the women are all eiher secondary or dead. (And hey, even if you forget about that restriction, there is only so much Yaone to go around :P).

But. But. It's not the sexual oritentation thing that bugs me here. After all, we know nothing of Goku or Sanzo's preferences (if any), at least in the point of the story I am at, and while I think Kou has a thing for Yaone, you can very easily interpret it as friendly/protective and transfer his affections to whoever. And just because Hakkai had an OTP who was a woman and Gojyo is a huge womanizer doesn't necessarily preclude them from being bi (I am having a hard time buying Gojyo as bi, but whatever floats your boat). It's the much more important character traits thing. Hakkai is so fucked up he couldn't manage a functional relationship with a paper napkin, and Sanzo is so removed from the world and so about control and lack of intimacy or vulnerability, I can't imagine him in a relationship short of hard drugs being involved. Yet, most slash I've found involved Sanzo and/or Hakkai. Odd. You'd have to do a lot of clever writing to believably get those characters to that point (and I am doubtful they'd ever be functional enough, no matter what). Also, I've seen Sanzo/Goku and surely I am not the only one who finds it creepy since they have a quasi parent/child relationship?

And now I will completely undermine my own point and admit that the slash relationship I can see the most is Sanzo/Hakkai. Except Sanzo could never allow himself an interest and Hakkai would never be functional. Hmmmmm.

Off to watch Veronica Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaars

Hmmmmm.

The Saiyuki section of ff.net makes me want to end the world to stop the pain.

You don't even need to know anything about the story to find these awful (really short summary: four guys fight demons).

A short poem about Sanzo, it is an ancient form of love poem used widely in African culture. Titled My Sun because he is! Rated K for safety! Please R&R It is appreciated and I will return the favor!

You mean you will favorably review MY poem? The one entitled "FF.net makes me want to die," which will wonder how nonexistent the embarassment level is in some people?

A girl with a dark past and an ability to make bad jokes finds Sanzoikkou in a restaurant by accident. What will happen to all of them? Find out by reading the rest! OCxHakkai

Hasn't the poor man suffered enough already?

What if Kanan's child was really Gonou’s? A year after her death, Hakkai’s been living with Gojyo for a while, and they’ve fallen into the commonplace normalcy of life. But when a woman comes with another chance, what will happen to Hakkai? Mpreg

Apparently not. I think Hakkai is about to claw his other eye out.

The four friends were doing just fine before Sanzo made the mistake of saving Sabi's life, placing her under lifedebt. Obeying her pride and honor, the manhating expriestess will follow them everywhere, bringing change along with her...

Does this Mary Sue even make sense? But I can see why the characters get cranky about saving of others if every time they do, a Mary Sue is born.

Sometimes the subconcious is smarter than the rest of the brain put together. HakkaiGojyo

And then there are all the other times. Like this fic.

All is not as it seems, and love isn't always perfect. HakkaiGojyo. Warnings: Abuse. My apologies?

I think the only abuse involved is that of the audience.

It gets worse )

And now we get to the Hakkai backstory. Wow. There's angst, and there is fucked up, and then there is this. Wow. He's got to be SO irretrievably broken. I mean, he was a human who became a demon, because he's had the blood of a thousand demons on his hands. That's...ummmm. I usually like to rewatch angsty scenes, but these ones are just...I don't think I want to.

What an unbelievably horrible thing to happen to you. I also cannot blame him in the least for what he did. When what's-his-name goes "you killed my whole clan. All for one woman" I want to scream "of course!" You took his OTP, tortured and raped her, and he came to get her. What do you thnk he should do? And the pathetic villagers, just giving her up because they were afraid. And after all of that, Kanan does what she does, in front of his eyes, and he cannot stop her. And she does it with his knife. The thing is, I don't blame her: she's been held in that place for months probably, raped and tortured repeatedly both by the monster and god knows who else. And now she is pregnant with the monster's child. She is completely strung out and fucked up. But the horrible thing is that Hakkai just wanted her back, he would deal with the monster offspring and her trauma and everything. He just wanted her back. But I can see why she just wanted death.

And that scene where he remembers Kanan telling him she loves his hands because they are beautiful is quite romantic and dreadfully sad. And he remembers his telling her he's now making enough money to support her. And then she tells him that now neither of them would have to be lonely anymore. Yeah. Shall you have some strichinine or wrist-slitting with that?

The thing that also struck me is how human Sanzo is with Hakkai. Their quiet conversation about trust is as open as we've ever seen Sanzo. In a way, they are equals. Sanzo knows the backstory (I wonder how. But don't spoil me) and really knows Hakkai. And I love Sanzo going ballistic when he finds Goku taken. He'd rather swallow his tongue than admit it, but he loves the brat.

But yeah, Hakkai's sanity must be held together by spit and frayed thread. That bit where he forgets who he is for a bit? Heartbreaking. No wonder he is always so pleasant and even tempered. It's all repression because if he allowed himself to feel otherwise, he'd either die or kill. And tht horrible fortune-teller really is awful. The end, with Hakkai, wistfully saying he wishes his lifeline was a bit longer because "Kanan, I'd like to live a little for myself" is sad. But Goku drawing a line with a magic marker is perfect. Saiyuki gets better and better.
