You know how last week I kept saying there is no way I could ever care for Maru or ship Eun Gi/Maru? Well, apparently I lied.

NG continues to be excellent but also a rather hard watch. It's well-written and acted but, as a viewer, I am finding it hard to muster my enthusiasm for the story whose male lead invokes burning rage in me and a desire to bash him in the head. Song Joong Ki is acting his socks off, and Maru is as fascinating and complex as he is repulsive, but repulsive he is - not to mention morally bankrupt (so is Jae Hee, but that goes without saying).

Long thoughts and lots of caps )

Episode 5 of Nice Guy was very good (well, except those Choco-friend-ex scenes. What are they even doing in this drama? Is LKH dying to do a romcom or something, but is pressed for time so has to shoehorn it into her airing drama?)

The thing is, it is clear by now Eun Gi is not playing Maru in any way (which I find both surprising, seeing her tough distrustful shell, and oddly true - seeing how vulnerable she is underneath). I am narratively fine with a revenge scheme on Maru's part but I do get a delicious "I can't wait until she finds out and goes apocalyptic on you" feeling for their scenes, mainly because Eun Gi is my POV character and what he is doing to her makes me blazingly angry (of course, it's all complicated by the fact that real feelings of care and concern and possibility of love are bleeding into the make-believe). What drives me nuts though is not the 'I am using EG' part, it's the fact that he is still hung up on Jae Hee. ENOUGH! It's like one of those romcoms where all the hero does is pine for the annoying second lead girl and you just want to hit the ff-button, climb into the screen and tell him to have his head examined. It makes sense 100% narratively for his character to be so hung up, but as a viewer, it just makes me want I had a brainwashing machine I could stick him into and move on past that.

Some caps from this episode. Jae Hee-free zone )

I believe in working my way up, so let's start with the bad. WTF, eps 11-12 of TTBY? How is it possible for my cute fluffy drama to go so boring? The fact that these eps focused mainly on the secondaries is a big big problem. I just don't find Eun Gyul either cute or compelling (I know, I know, minority of one) and why they thought spending a lot of time on Hana or Tae Joon/Hana would be of interest to anyone is one of the world's big mysteries. On the plus side, all that fast-forwarding saved me a lot of time so yay?

Worth checking out solely for this:

More plot-relevant caps )

Now, on to the mediocre, namely May Queen. I am in with this for the long haul (once again, with plentiful strategic fastforwarding) because I love the actors of the main trio and their chemistry and interactions are compelling, but my impression that this drama is written by brain-dead hamsters on a tight deadline has not lessened (why is this getting better ratings than the vastly superior Five Fingers again?) The way the whole 'is she my daughter? nope, probably not' thing is handled in this ep would have made my eyes fall out of my sockets if I felt invested enough in the ludicrous birthplot to care. I am beginning to believe pretty much every character in this except for the trio, In Hwa, and the uncle and aunt have cement for brains. This said, HJH is a darling, Jae Hee is doing his best in a role that is not making me ship him with HJH (grow a spine, dude! Go Oedipal on Daddy!) and the whole thing is worth watching for the marvelous faces Kim Jae Won makes. Why so darling, KJW! The drama gets about 50x better any time he is on-screen and he and HHJ have lovely chemistry. Can we ditch the rest of the waterlogged plot and just concentrate on them shipbuilding and enacting the most adorable revenge on everyone? Or something. I mean, who could say no to this face:

Some caps )

And now on to the good - episode 4 of Nice Guy. Even cranky and sick me was not immune to how good this was. One of the things I love about this drama is that scenes are given room to breathe, characters (incredibly complex and fascinating) are given room to develop and process...

More thoughts and a ton of caps )

And that's it for today, folks!

First, about the Faith goodies.

1. The always amazing [livejournal.com profile] scottishlass wrote a CY/ES fanfic. Go check it out. I love it!

2. If you haven't read [livejournal.com profile] rockharlequin awesome and often hilarious thoughts on ep 12, what are you waiting for?

Now, on to Nice Guy episode 3. With every episode, I become more and more convinced that this is going to be a wonderful entry into the dark, intelligent melodrama genre, a genre I thought was almost dead until NG (this is quite a year of throwbacks - Love Rain brought back pure love melodrama of the four seasons' fame). It's a genre I am very fond of and was mourning the demise of. Thank you, Lee Kyung Hee.

If episode 1 reeled me in, episode 2 confirmed my enslavement. I haven't felt something so intense, so capable of striking me straight into the solar plexus for a long time (I feel drained after each episode). I feel deeply for both Maru and Eun Gi (but especially Maru - I am unhealthily overinvested in him already. I worry what shape I will be in by the end). The rest of them? Nuke them from orbit!

It really reminds me of A Love to Kill, with its self-destructive revenge, damaged and almost destroyed protagonists. Which is worrisome because we know how ALTK ended.

Thoughts and caps on the episode )

I am not sure how my sanity is going to hold through the end, but I am willing to find out!
