I have finally had a chance to check out the first episode of a liveaction take on one of my all-time favorite mangas, Ouran High School Host Club and I am in love in love in love in love in love.

Somehow they managed to transfer the cracky, cheeky, post-modern metaish, with a hidden heart vibe of the manga (and the awesome anime. It was the only shoujo anime Mr. Mousie ever liked).

The story, such as it is, is about Haruhi, a brilliant scholarship student in a ritzy school. Haruhi is a girl but has little interest in gender norms - she wears a male uniform as more comfortable and has her hair chopped short (I am not getting into long meta again but I really like this drama's take on gender). Through a hilarious set of circumstances, Haruhi ends up working as a host with the Ouran High School Host Club in order to pay a debt. The hosts are the only ones who know she's a girl and Haruhi is very popular with the ladies as a femmy type of boy. Haruhi is pragmatic and no-nonsense and is both puzzled and amused (and occasionally exasperated and always unimpressed) by her fellow hosts, especially by the leader, Tamaki, is a diva and a drama queen and totally lacking in street smarts and is the sweetest, kindest, loveliest person. Needless to say, Haruhi/Tamaki is my (and the manga's) OTP.

If you are looking for realistic exploration of class differences or low-key acting, stay away! It you want a funny, endearing, irrestible bit of fun, come right in!

Caps and thoughts ep 1 )

So yes, a total adoration. I have no idea how much of it is because I am so familiar with the story (i.e. I can't tell if there are any narrative gaps because I know the story backwards, and I come into it already loving the gang) but I do think it's really good. I will probably not even bother waiting for subs any more because I can follow raws (Darksmurf does fast and decent subs btw).

In conclusion, have a shippy anime MV, mainly because I adore the song:

OK, livejournal won't let me post long entries. They are still working out bugs and long entries do not work yet.

So, if you want to read my impressions of the first episode of liveaction Ouran High School Host Club, go to my dreamwidth.

If you are a LJ member, you can comment there too (I have anon commenting enabled as well). I'll attempt to properly crosspost it later, but for now this is what I got.

Just a general notice: everything I post here is crossposted at http://dangermousie.dreamwidth.org

So if LJ is down or glitchy or slow, you can go there to hang out with moi :P

ETA: I can post long posts if I use Safari and mobile version of LJ through email, it seems.

I have just started 2009 anime Genji Monogatari Sennenki, an 11-ep adaptation of the famous "Tale of Genji", arguably the earliest novel ever written, following the endless quest for love and entertainment of Hikaru Genji, a prince in 11th-century Japan.

I checked it out for two reasons:

* I plan to read the very lengthy novel but an anime focusing on a few incidents in the story is an accessible way to delve into the world prior to reading it so I won't be lost entirely
* The artwork is insanely gorgeous.

After an episode in, I love it - the artwork is amazing and the leisurely, looping, melancholy narrative is an art in and of itself. It's all pervaded by equal parts beauty, longing, and loss.

I am sure everyone who's interested has heard by now they are making a live-action version of Ouran High School Host Club. My expectations are not high. I adore the anime and the manga, but jdrama adaptations of manga rarely work for me (Hanadan being a big honking exception, rather than the norm). Twdramas, otoh...

I will definitely check it out though. At least the guy they picked for Tamaki looks Tamaki-ish (also like Angelina Jolie, but that is by the by) Pic here )

I am going to find other cast pics (I was lazy - this was the only one posted on d-addicts). Hopefully they got Haruhi right too.

Oh, and I am not posting much about it because it's not too meta-able, but I am quietly watching Muscle Girl and continuing to enjoy it. It's such a low maintenance, sweet drama. Plus, the OTP is adorable!

And with Mommy issues.

Our local Borders is one of the ones going out of business so I went there to pick over the remains. It was pretty well raided out but I did find five volumes of the Fushigi Yuugi (15-yr-old schoolgirl is transported to magic version of ancient China, must go on quest) omnibus volumes which means 15 regular volumes, at prices that were a steal.

Ah, FY. If you were around my LJ in 2005, you probably remember my obsession (probably it's what primed me for period cdramas, eventually. I even have my ideal version fantasy cdrama cast even if they all skew a bit older than teens :P). I also still love that story to bits in every respect - it has adventure, wall-to-wall angst, shipping to die for, and is very self-referential and tongue-in-cheek when needed.

Anyway, purchasing that made me rather nostalgic. I sort of want to rewatch the anime now but am a bit scared (one of the only two times I had hysterics watching a show involves FY and there were other scenes in it that left me a total wreck). So for now, I am going to satisfy myself by continuing with The Holy Pearl, a.k.a. the cdrama live-action take on Inuyasha, another one of 'modern girl goes through time to fantasy land.'

Have a MV for the secondary OTP from it. No idea who they are but they look cool.

Oh, and as a bonus, FY's opening credits. Oh, how I used to be obsessed with it.

At least that seems to be the consensus of the commenters to the trailer - that this 2011 fantasy cdrama The Holy Pearl seems very similar. Having never seen/read the anime/manga, I cannot say whether they are correct, but I do think going to a fantasy realm and hooking up with a hottie with horns and thus involving yourself in a love triangle with your own previous incarnation sounds like a fun drama plot.

Here is the subbed trailer:

I really hope this pops up subbed somewhere.

ETA/PSA: Updated links as previous ones have been yanked by YT.

I have finished ep 1 of Wallflower and I am totally obsessed - it's my jdrama of the season. I never thought any live-action could get the quirky, funny, Gothic feel of the manga right but this did. And the actors are definitely now my Sunako, Kyohei, Takenaga, Ranmaru and Yuki. So spot on.

I love my violent, horror-loving Sunako! They kept every bit of her strangeness intact. (She is not ugly but she does not care about her appearance and her personality/style/tastes are what freak people out - and she never gives them up, eeee!)

I love my violent, roughly nice Kyohei. I really like that they seem to keep the running manga theme of both Sunako and Kyohei both being equally very trapped by their looks - not being seen for themselves but for external things.

I am in love all over again with my violent off-kilter OTP which likes to kick butt:

And there is Kyohei staring after they demolish about a batallion of goons (smitten, smitten, he is smitten!):

He gives her sweets (her giant passion :P) and she gives him a replica skull. That is, indeed, true love.

Note: For those who can't wait for Giri Giri subs and don't want to watch raw, this is on viikii and I am sure the ep will be subbed completely within a day or two.
