We get this in the first five minutes of A Thousand Day Promise:

Whoa.

As you can tell, I started ATDP properly. I was delaying due to mixed reviews but finally curiousity won out (plus, you have a lot of time when you are minding a sick, sleeping child).

So far, one episode in, I really love it. But then, I tend to love dark melodramas, stories with damaged and damaging protagonists. Neither Kim Rae Won nor Su Ae portray good people but I cannot help but be drawn into their destructive world, their fractured story. KRW is excellent as always and, I think, this is finally a drama where I get the fuss about Su Ae. She left me cold in everything else I've seen her in but I love her performance in this.

Now, here is a dilemma. I am kinda enjoying the show except for one glaring glaring issue - I loathe loathe loathe and despise the heroine.

The cap above is one of many reasons why (this cap picked for sexytime prettiness - screenshots of angry housewives are less photogenic). I don't care if Emily is out for revenge and wrecks the lives of those who wrecked hers. But she doesn't give a fuck about collateral damage - in wrecking people who are innocent of any wrongdoing, she is no better than those she seeks revenge on. Daniel is the only the most prominent one of these - I don't particularly love the guy, but he seems a decent enough sort whose only crime is being the son of people Emily wants revenge on - wtf? What kind of person seduces and enters into a relationship with someone to get revenge on his parents? How about all these people whose secrets Emily very publically outed via video to bring down that shrink? What do they have to do with her family drama? Why must their lives be ruined? Or the investors in that fund she destroyed? Some little old lady is going to have her income cut in half and struggle to pay the bills now! Or Daniel's sister - her only crime, like Daniel's, is to be born to people Emily hates - so yeah, get the girl to know her mother wishes she was never born.

Anyway, I loathe and despise Emily and want her brought down forever.

This is not a good show experience - to hate the protagonist. I don't have to like them (I love Boardwalk Empire despite not loving any of the characters. I don't hate any of them - they are too fascinating, but then, BE is in another league from Revenge) but if I want to erase that smug face every time I see her, I think it's time to drop it.Maybe, if I loved some other character, but I don't.

I much prefer Ringer - it's not as good but I actually like and root for Bridget (and like Andrew and Juliet as well).

I confess I am totally loving Ringer. I skip every scene involving Agent Boring or Juliet (I have no patience with her emo teen ways and entitlement. Also, she looks a decade too old to be Ioan Gruffudd's daughter unless he had her at 12) but the rest is pure delight.

The fact that I ship Bridget/Andrew is no surprise but I enjoy the show in general - it knows it's soapy, silly goodness and embraces it, becoming gloriously entertaining in the process. I love Bridget and really hope she makes it work - whatever 'it' is, i.e. what makes her happy (I hope it's Andrew and his posh accent and his millions, but if she wants Malcolm or be on her own or whatever, I am fine with that).

But I am even more fascinated by Siobhan, who's smart, ruthless and borderline sociopath (faking forgiveness in order to put a hit on your sister - that's beyond cold). I think Siobhan's curse is that she is never happy - if you think about it, marriage with Andrew should have made her 100% fulfilled - he seems a decent sort who would treat her like a queen if she only gave him a chance (look how quickly Bridget has him at her beck and call and all she does is treat him decently) and marriage to him gives her money, prestige, and access to best stuff in New York and elsewhere. Siobhan is not the type to need to love so I don't think her lack of feelings for him is a reason of why she is unhappy. I think the issue is that she just can't be happy - maybe it's a control thing, maybe it's a trauma thing, maybe a sociopath thing. But I can't wait to see more of her. Plus, her Paris eyecandy is super-hot.

Henry is SO BORING. He needs to get off my screen. Gemma was kind of annoying too (wtf with her 'sleep with my husband' scenario?) so at least one annoyance less, I suppose.

Also, Logan Echolls! As an English teacher. Can one LOL and swoon at the same time?
